Dealing with OneNote files

One of our teachers received a OneNote file (software which we don't have) and passed it to me to open. I tried using Skydrive to open it, but got a message saying the file had been created with a previous version of OneNote and wouldn't open (thanks for that Microsoft!) Anyway, we couldn't open it, so I had the teacher contact the author and ask them to export the file to .doc, something OneNotes can do. Problem solved.

 

Well not quite. I can see this becoming a regular issue. Does anyone know of either a OneNote viewer or a converter, preferably in the £0 price range. What do you do with OneNote files?

 

Bigger question. Why does OneNote exist at all? M$ already have Word, Works and RTF file formats for text documents, and no doubt others too. Do we really need yet more crappy file formats to deal with?

Because it is a note taking application, and the other formats you mention do not offer the capabilities required to be good at that task.

 

I expect that evernote uses a proprietary format too.

 

Assuming you aren't already on EES (because it would already be available to you as part of Office Pro), it might be worth looking at purchasing a copy.

We find OneNote useful in conjunction with our Learning Support software [Lucid Exact, Lucid LASS and Lucid LADS (I think?)]

 

Anyway when it comes time to produce reports we print the reports to OneNote. That way the reports can be viewed without needing to use the Lucid software [it is installed at a very limited number of stations and these stations could be in use when wanting to look at the reports]

I thought OneNote came as standard with all version of Office from 2007 onwards?

It's not on the Office 2007 iso that we have.

I had a similar problem to this, and had to install OneNote to open a file. The easiest thing is for the sender to export it as something else (like a Word document IIRC) before they send the file.
