Old car - Ideas?

At this present moment I'm driving around in a 20k mile Rover 111, This is my 3rd Metro/100, and I'm thinking of getting a "different" 2nd car to mess about with from the cheap end of the market. Stuff like old Rover 800s or Hillman Avengers and the like. I have an idea of what I don't want, but not so much what I do want.

 

The "no" list is:

 

VW beetle: Too slow, rusty and useless for anything other than a fashion statement

 

Original Mini: Expensive now, only really any good in 1275 guise

 

MK1/2 Escorts: Silly prices and not many left

 

other than that, anything goes!

 

Any ideas?

VW camper - Extra uses, great support groups & just nice vehicles

 

Series Land Rover or even a not so old Land Rover say a Discovery - again, multi-purpose vehicle, easy to work on, many possibilities, clubs to join.

MR2 mk1,

nova with c20let (2l tubby) conversion,

xr2,

cavelier 4x4 turbo,

 

 

What sort of budget are you looking at? And whats it for? All of the above will make very capible track/fast road cars, and will be very cheap to fix.

FN-GreaterManchester I suggest you look around the magazine section of your local supermarket and see how many VW enthusiast mags there are. Also have a search on net there's lots of sites for old Dubs.

 

My sister and husband have one of the original splitty dub vans and it cost nearly 10k, for a shell. Needed everything redoing, goes well now he's cleaned the engine completely and fit two carbs....anyway...

MK1 golf. Affordable, still plenty to choose from, and still good as a daily driver as I drive mine to work and back everyday. check out http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk for an excellent owners club too.

VW beetles are horrid.

 

Now...landrover discovery...defenders....some range rovers are all very good

 

You can sometimes pick up some of these things quite cheaply from army surpless places and if not at least you know it's been well looked after.

As lovely as my little Mx-3 is, rhyds is on about getting "another car", if you ever get "another car" to run along side your everyday car you would want something a little different surely. Granted you don't see that many mx-3s around but you see even fewer mustangs

Saw an old Y-plate LR Series Pickup today (not sure of the exact series, but was deffo a leaf sprung model) for about £1200, had a Montego perkins prima conversion. A real drive-through-stuff-rather-than-around car.

 

VW camper: Really not my scene, I am young (21), but I'd rather buy a car for it's engineering and what it is rather than for how cool it is.

 

My main interest has always been in BMC/BL/Austin Rover metal, but these other suggestions are coming in handy. Budget would be about £1500, depending on car, I can't weld but mechanicals aren't an issue.
