Remote Desktop Connection for non admin users

Hi there,

I have noticed that often if I wish to connect to a remote computer as the user who actually uses that computer (i.e. not an administrator), I am not allowed. This is because they are not in the selected users list for that actual computer or an administrator.

This is fine, but sometimes I want to take over their session, rather than forcibly log them off only to log in as an admin and not see what they actually see.

 

Is there a way I can make all my staff member user accounts able to log on to RDC without visiting each computer and adding that member of staff to the list? Would it be a case of me adding remote users group or similar to their Member off Tab in Active Directory?

 

Any help would be great.

Gpo to add them into the remote desktop usrrs group.

It sounds like your problem could be solved using Remote Assistance, which lets you connect and view another user's session while they are in front of it. I frequently use it to see what the user is seeing when they call in with a problem, and it works very well.

We use VNC for that kind of thing, nice and easy quick remote access using machine hostname and password.

It turns out I enabled all those GPO settings months back but never actually tested it - infact, I forgot all about it and had been vaguely planning testing VNC at some point in the future.

 

Now I have even less need to leave my desk. +rep!

been meaning to have a look at that for ages thanks now have it set up here and will no doubt roll out to other schools when time permits

VNC used to work like a dream, but I found when testing it these days, it did not always work so well what with the firewalls on Windows 7 and 8
