Hiding Mapped Drives

Hi guys,

 

I've got a bit of a weird question/request. Does anyone know how to hide mapped drives for members of the local administrator group? I've been asked to find a way for staff to be able to install their home printers, scanners etc on their laptops. Staff are able to install printers on the network, but it's a different story with the software packages that come with printers. We can't really expect them to do a manual install of the drivers only. The best (although in some ways the worst) way to get round this is to add them to the local administrators group on their laptops via group policy. This works, but the side effect (apart from giving them local admin rights...) is that they can see previously hidden mapped drives - such as C:\ and drives we use for network applications. It's not the end of the world, but it does look a bit messy, plus they are then able view and save to drives which we don't really want them saving to. I've tried a number of ways but have had very little luck. One thing I have managed to do is hide drive from my domain administrator account, but not the test staff account...

 

It's probably really easy, and I've just missed something obvious.

 

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

 

Windows 7 32 bit laptops, Server 2008 R2 DC. Drives mapped and hidden through:

 

User Configuration - Preferences - Windows Settings - Drive Maps

try under group policy preferences ->user config - preferences-windows settings-drivemaps

 

set location to local drive and select show / hide this drive

 

not tested but it may work!

Hi Chris,

 

That's where I've set it - all set to hide. They were hidden before the staff member was added to the local administrators group. But are now visible.
