Help spec-ing up for moodle 2.4 server

Hi

 

We currently run a moodle 1.9 installation at a largish secondary school. It runs on its own server and has done for the last 4 years.

 

We are now looking at timing a hardware refresh and upgrading to moodle 2.4 at the same time. My question is what type spec server would I need to be looking at?

 

Total users: 3000 (students, parents, staff)

Concurrent: 150-200

 

Any help would be great thanks.

8Gb RAM, 500Gb, Xeon E5504 2Ghz, windows server 2008.

whatever spec you go for, make sure install something like xcache.

we currently run with

8 gig ram

4 cores at 2.5 Ghz

300 gig disk space

Ubuntu server 12.04

APC caching

This is a VM running atop Vmware ESX

 

We used to run two windows based vms - one for database and one for Apache also on the vmware server. however the single Ubuntu VM has given use much better performance

In my experience Moodle is much easier to get up & running / installed in a Linux environment.

My new build is:

 

DB server: CentOS 6.4 / 8GB RAM / 2vCPU / 80GB HDD

Web server: CentOS 6.4 / APC accelerator / 8GB RAM / 2vCPU / 30GB HDD (system) / 500GB (data)

 

Running virtualised but on an EMC storage array with flash disks and auto tiering so in theory if the Moodle DB gets lots of hits it'll go onto the fast storage. Didn't like the idea of running Moodle on Windows, PHP doesn't seem to work as well as it does on Linux (imo)
