5:35 on a Sunday night and I got a text saying as they don't receive cables with Nokia phones how do you setup work emails on them.

Looks like I will be flicking the SMS switch too on iblacklist.

Auto reply setup

"Auto reply - I am not currently in the office at the minute. Please use report a fault if you have a issue and another technician should pick it up. Thanks"

For those that haven't jailbroken their iPhone. Do not Disturb will not make a noise when someone that is not on your favorites list rings, texts or emails. I have to say though that I am loving some of the irony here about 'do not answer outside work time. simples.'.... while they're posting on a forum in work time....

Definitely fine with the black listing option here. If you open that door then you can never close it again. You will become a 24/7 work and personal IT monkey.

I've been feeling for quite some time that this thread shows quite nicely why some teachers regard their support staff as "unprofessional".

Sure, don't let them take the p!ss, but working with people ends up with a much more pleasant working environment. If you are determined to be a jobs-worth, go and work for British Leyland. "Sorry mate, I'm a nut tightener. More than my job's worth to undo a nut!"

In the same way that its unprofessional to ask your IT tech at work to fix your personal laptop. For free.

Or phone them up at the weekend and all but demand they go to your parents house to fix something. For free.

You two never heard the phrase "Two wrongs don't make a right"? Sheesh...

Being expected to work during your free time isn't right. At all. EVER.

You want me to work outside of my contracted hours? That starts at £19.50 - and I charge the full hour.

Unless they're willing to pay you for it, don't do it. It's a hard thing to say no, but unless you make that break I'd start expecting late-night calls to be the new norm.

i have no problem with being asked as long as they are willing to accept no as an answer (its not an unreasonable question) if im busy or just dont need the hassle. It does depend whos asking and when though there are teachers out there i will put myself out to help and others i just wont.

There's a couple of staff members in the past who i've broken my back to help with things that aren't work related or are so far out of my job description it's untrue but who then talk to me like dirt and never remember the help i've given them when they ask for something not work related and i've had to turn them down. These people go straight to the bottom of my list

Indeed. Nor does one wrong, so why would you defend people being taken advantage of? Because outside of the odd "mistaken" call, that's what this is.

It's one thing to have to pull a late night or even a weekend every now and again to fix a big system problem or get a rollout done on time, I've done plenty of those even in education, and there's no place for clock watching in this profession. But it's not right to expect people to answer the phone outside of their contracted hours or any agreed 'on call' time.
