mattx Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 I was testing my FreeNAS media box today and noticed a crap output when streaming and copying video files. On checking the switch - HP 4104 there were reports of excessive collisions. The port was set to Auto. When I forced the port to 100FDx the imrprovement was huge. [ Plus no excessive collisions ] - seems odd to me that I had to change the status of the port - I would have thought the switch should have coped without my intervention.....
mattx Posted August 8, 2007 Author Posted August 8, 2007 The NAS box you mean - that was set to 100 meg full duplex. When I was investigating the problem I set the NAS box to Auto and it made no difference. The performance / problem was solved after changing the port on the switch. This is the first time I have had to change a port setting on this switch which has been running for over 3 years now....
maniac Posted August 8, 2007 Posted August 8, 2007 Check the firmware of your switch, and update if necessary, this could be a known problem. I've had issues with switchs in the past to do with excessive dropped packets etc. that have been resolved by updating the firmware to the latest version. Also try a different cable, just to illiminate it as a possible problem. Failing that, give HP support a call. I believe the modules in those switches carry a lifetime warrenty, so if there's the possibility of a faulty module, then they may replace it free of charge for you. They did for me with my 4108gl switch. I also recently got 3 fibre tranceivers swapped out that had failed in the past, no one realised you can get them replaced under warrenty, so replacements had been brought. Cheers, Mike.
