I'm very tempted to ditch my Windows MCE (the only reason for keeping Windows at home still).

I recently stumbled accross this and am in the process of stting it up, are either of you hae sucess ,are you still running it ?

its looking pretty good so far, I should be entering the MCE gui itself shortly , I had alot of bother with mythbuntu but so far this is much easier

This looks like one of those open source projects that's just died - the most recent ISO seems to be based on an 18 month old version of Ubuntu. Nothing wrong with that necessarily but it does mean that if you have problems, they might not get fixed.

 

I've been using Mythbuntu OK; a few niggles but they're not really to do with the "myth" bit (my wireless card doesn't work unless you compile your own driver; the USB TV card I have needs firmware but that won't download until you get the wireless working ...)

I tried this about 5 years ago, looks good but didn't find it worked to well and ditched it for Mediaportal.

 

As Steve says they have not released an update for ages (I stopped looking and hoping quite sometime ago) unless they have of course finally released an update that is!

I am with you Paul_L. LinuxMCE looks good work poorly I also went with media portal much easier

I am the lead developer of LinuxMCE.

 

I would like to clarify some misconceptions in this thread.

 

We released the 0710 release in May of 2008, since this time, we shifted completely to a community based development model, now that the original parent company has allowed us to completely develop the system on our own. We have a beta release of the next release available, and we recommend installing this, over the previous stable release, due to a large amount of bugfixes and feature additions.

 

It is worth noting that yes, this system is much more complex than a media center. It is a smart home platform. If all you want is a single PC to play media, LinuxMCE is not for you. If you want a computer system to handle virtually all your media, lighting, climate control, security system, and telephony needs, there is nothing else that even comes close, especially since you would spend close to a million USD to get all the functionality that we provide with the system out of the box to handle ALL of these facilities.

 

Yes, everything you see in the demo videos is real, yes, it works, but it does take a significant investment in planning and implementation time, it has to, we do a lot.
