Moodle setup issues

I am installing Moodle on a windows 2008 server. I already run HAP and terminal services so the port I am using for xampp is port 81

setup the database etc and at the moodle install screen so here is the issue

 

Internally: I have to access http://vle............:81/moodle for it to work whereas extrernally I can access the site by its name i.e http://vle.sitename.sch.uk/moodle to get to the install screens

 

The issue is internally if I use :81 and setup moodle it can no longer be accessed externally as it wont be looking for that address

 

Has anyone used a different port and if so how have you got it to work?

I'm guessing HAP is using IIS (don't use it, but IIRC it's ASP?), correct? As is TS if you're using web-based TS?

 

Have you considered ditching xampp and adding Moodle to the existing IIS server? Something like this: Whitepapers | BFC Networks (though I'd put exceptions in for what you need, rather than flipping off the firewall).

 

What's doing the routing from http://vle.sitename.sch.uk/moodle to internal-server:81 ?

HAP uses IIS, why not just create a new site in IIS Manager with the port 8080 (Browsers seem to love 8080) and host it there?

 

There is no real need to fiddle around with XAMPP, and the last time I used it, it was a massive security hole.

Reading more of this thread, i sort of see your issue.

 

To do it properly with reversing, you want to set it up on IIS, use the built in ARP and URL Rewrite it to the internal ports.

 

We did this with our own home document solution:

 

Internal Hostname: http://homefile:8080

External: https://portal.n***********/homefile/

 

And ask Moodle to look for your EXTERNAL address
