Hi all

 

We're looking at getting a new wireless solution and I was just wondering what you guys recommend? I always hear good things about Ruckus but is it more costly? Also what are people's thoughts on Xirrus?

If you need to service 200 users in a conference facility I would definitely look at Xirrus however 30 kids in a class room... might be overkill.

having various systems in various schools the one that just seems to work best is ruckus. Cisco stuff isnt bad but the stuff weve installed has a limit of 10 aps for 1 management interface. Netgear stuff was an mistake their g stuff was good their n stuff was nothing but problems

Please consider Unifi - its easily a quarter of the cost and will do all you want and more and they have 802.11ac access points now and these are still the cheapest on the market.

 

Where did you get your Unifi solution from? Can anyone else rate them?

Yes. I rate them, have been running schoolwide for a while now. Brilliant value and performance. I talked to m25man, who gave me a demo and supplied me the kit. Try a couple and see how you go. They are so much cheaper than anything else I've found so far.

Unifi here, we have had them longer then most people have, put our first in during 2010, and covered the school in 2011. We have about 500 users on ours points across the school.

Unifi - I was sold on this kit the first day I installed one, 2000 units later we are still installing them. I rarely use anything else now, the best thing about them is that there is hardly any reseller margin in them so the usual crowd are not interested in selling them... which means they are ideal for self install or for VAR's to make a decent living out of installing them.

Yes, you can get them online but the service and support from some of these resellers is laughable.

Demand is outstripping supplies so I have to keep enough handy for my own needs, if I can help I do.

AC is expected at the Master Distributors 7th June but I have some on the way from the US to test.

Trouble is I have yet to locate a decent 802.11ac adapter to test with.. the laptop doesn't have enough antennas and only the NETGEAR A6200 USB stick supports concurrent dual band for 860 Mbps. The Samsung S4 has AC but only 450Mbps so it will be a while before we can really post some findings I think.

At least the .AC Access point has abgn concurrent use so we can test some 600Mbps sessions until then.

So why am I so pro Unifi, I bought my shares when they were $7 each.. they are now $15 the more geeks wake up and smell the coffee the quicker I can retire.

If you are looking at LAN upgrades at anytime soon it may be worth looking at the Cisco 3850 which is a stackable switch with integrated wireless controller. Two birds one stone ? ;-)
