Well, looking at Wikipedia, the Cisco/Linksys SG300 looks best...

I meant all round - there's a large difference in that the SG300 is over £400 and the Dlink is just over £100.

I think that HP model is one of the rebadged 3com switches when HP absorbed 3com. None the less a better choice than Netgear. I used the Netgear switches you quoted previously and they would sometimes lose the configs during a maintenance power cycle.

The lower end of HP's range is the procurve line which is where the v series sits . The H3C/3com stuff is in their midrange and is the A series.

The "procurve" name covers everything HP from high end to low end, it's not a brand name for a specific price range. The V1910 is a rebranded 3com which sits in the low end, but there's also rebranded 3coms that sit in the mid and highend, when HP took over 3com they discontinued a lot of 3coms switch models and just slotted their most popular/suitable models into their current range where required (i think, don't quote me on that).

HP V1910 == ex 3Com 2928/2952 Baseline SFP Plus == rebranded H3C S5120-SI (with some softwarelocks, i.e. no IRF stacking, no "official" CLI): nice feature set, but with loud fans. For the price it´s a bargain.

HP 1810 == It´s HP lowcost really basic managable switch, but without "Procurve OS" (which you have on e.g. 25XX, 3500/3800/5400/8200), something else, almost no features, but fanless. For that price you can have other fanless switches with more features (No, not the Cisco/Linksys SG300 of course. And no, I haven´t that Zxyel GS1910, or that DLink DGS-1210, so I cannot say anything about them. So, this is only about looking at the datasheets)

But none of the A5120's 5500's 4800's A5800's are branded as pro curve. And they are definitely 3com. Confused.

Not that it should matter. The majority of primary schools out this way have been running on 3com 4400's for the last decade without them dropping a beat. I wouldn't rate 3com any less than HP back in the day!

Well, HP bought 3Com and H3C some years ago.

- Before that 3Com rebranded some of the H3C switches, not all, e.g. the 3Com 2924 SFP Plus is not based upon H3C´s Comware operating system, as I remember; (the HP V1910 is and the mentioned HP E4800 == 3Com 4800G == H3C S5500-EI) So, there are H3C switches that have never had any "3Com" label onboard. Be careful if you say "5500": There was indeed a 3Com 5500, which was sold as HP E5500, but this one has nothing to do with the HP A5500 series. The 3Com 5500 was a relabeled H3C S5600 I think. Understood?

- And we have HP´s "old" "Procurve" labeled switches which they sold before they overtook 3Com/H3C. (Btw, HP is adjusting its old "Procurve" based switches so you can use H3C´s CLI syntax there.)

 

Now, I think HP calls all its switches "HP Networking" and distinguishes between "V","E" and "A" series.

The only thing you can make out what is what is by reading the release notes. H3C based switches have Comware operating system and therefore have CMW310 (Comware version 3.10), CMW520 (Comware version 5.20) and CMW710 (Comware version 7.10) while the Procurve ones have e.g. K.13, K.14, K.15.* labels.

I have one of the cheaper H3C switches in my HP fabric which I bought by mistake, (sold as HP Baseline 2928) never again will I make such a mistake, its a real PIA I wish I had read the specs better before I bought it.

Making it work properly with our 8 HP VLans has been problematic and it complains bitterly on its uplink back to the core with far too many error frames yet If I put an HP26xxx or even a Netgear in its place everything everything else is sweet,

We have thrown every update at it, used SFPs and copper for uplinking and its still rubbish.

I know 3Com made good switches but these things are complete *€$¥......

I would never have knowingly bought it, that's why it's ended up in a far reaching corner of the network where it doesn't require a lot of configuration and only has 4 devices and an uplink.

 

The usual apples, buy cheap buy twice..
