Setting up NAS - best practice

Just bought a nice tidy looking 2TB Buffalo Linkstation NAS box which has 2 by 1TB drives that can be set in either Raid 0 or Raid 1.

 

We have a growing need for multimedia storage that doesn't necessarily need backing up on the curriculum domain - animation and photographs being the main items I suppose.

 

Whats best practice for setting this little beast up for the most effective and practical use we can get out of it?

 

I was thinking of setting it up as two shared drives one for student shared work and the other for staff with appropriate permissions on each (which again I'd appreciate suggestions on).

 

Currently one TA / Instructor who covers art and photography has 37GB of data stored in her home folder!!

we have the larger linkstation the 8tb LS-QVL one which was default raid5, it replaced our old 1tb buffalo drive that went bang after about 5 years of us (Fan Failure), we have it set up as the staff media share and the IT departments Technical area at the moment, they can be a bit fiddly with NTLM we found, but it works well now, they can be setup as a network share and managed very well from the web based stuff they put on it.

 

We have planned for a staff share with departments having areas to save stuff too and then giving the departments each a security groups so only they can delete anything in those particular areas to prevent any blundering about in there, the NAS comes with a recycle bin feature too ill wager like this one, which comes in handy at times.
