Recommended Certifications for ICT Techncians

Hello all,

 

I am trying to get a job as an ICT technician, I have plenty of technical knowledge and have come to realise that I need some professional ICT certifications to help me get in. I have recently passed my CompTIA A+ exam and am about to do the Network+, as you guys are always full of good advice what would be your top certifications you would recommend?

Hopefully any half decent employer will see that qualifications aren't the be all and end all of a good employee and that they'll hire you on your strengths rather than what shiny certificate you can wave at them.

 

That said, the A+ and Network+ are a good start. Any further recommendations really depend on what job you're doing though. A CCNA or CCNP would be nice (maybe) but not too useful if you're a tech who doesn't look after a Cisco network and doesn't have to do much more than fix a computer and change a toner. Some of the Microsoft courses are probably worth doing, maybe start with an MCSA in Windows 7/8 and 2008R2/2012 and go on from there if the job calls for it.

Good advice from Norphy I would say. Also, don't over certify for your experience level, that could hinder rather than help you.

Have you ever looked at going down the apprenticeship route. One of my current technicians started out with us whilst doing this apprenticeship with QA.

Also apply at some local schools for voluntary work. At might last school we had a quite a few people come in for 1 or 2 days a week to help out. Pretty much everyone of them got a full time job with us or with another school we recommended them too.
