CESIL Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I have a problem that I am going to investigate today so I thought I would consult the oracle for any ideas that may help... I have a laptop that normally connects via a docking station. Yesterday it lost communication with the server. I can ping the router and printers but not the server, it times out. I switched to the onboard ethernet port, same result. I moved to another network socket/cable, same result. I boot from USB into Linux, same result. So...where do I look for the cause since I have ruled out the OS and cables/sockets and both internal and USB ethernet ports show the same fault?
XiJ Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 If you've ruled out all that, could it be something strange at the server end? Perhaps DHCP related? Can you delete it's dhcp entry and/or try a static IP on the client.
mac_shinobi Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 Server end for security reasons - has the server got icmp or ping disabled on the nic ? Think on windows xp or 7 its generally under firewall settings Long shot in the dark !!!

mac_shinobi Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 (edited) Docking station wise if you shut down the laptop and undock the laptop. Power off as in disconnect mains to the dock for about 10 seconds and then re connect and power the dock back on and re connect the laptop and power that back on does that help at all ? Also update the network card drivers at least and possibly the chipset drivers if they are out of date On the client as a last resort use netsh to reset winsock and the tcp.ip stack and reset the hosts file back to defaults. 2097 Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 indeed we have had many pc's here that if they arnt getting a IP , you disconnected the plug from the socket and wait 10 secs and reconnect and it all works good
CESIL Posted April 23, 2013 Author Posted April 23, 2013 OK...so it is working again... So I tried a fixed ip address and connection was restored and all pings worked. Next I disabled ip addresses .69 and .70 (one for the usb ethernet port and the other for the internal port) in the servers DHCP pool and rebooted the laptop with DHCP re-enabled. A new address was given out and the laptop was back in communication with the server once more! I guess I will leave those two addresses out of the pool for now, but why I should need to I don't understand... ** Oh dear I started a sentence with "So", one of my pet hates and now I am infected... 1

Maybe release, renew the connection from a command prompt running as admin ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew then flush dns and re register dns ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns ??
