My understanding is that moving SIMS from one server to another is a relatively simple process. Run the installers then use dbattach to restore the backup of the database from the old server. Is there anything more to it than that? Just wondering why our LA insist they must do it, and charge accordingly...

The issues will lie in setup of the new server, normally it's going to be an upgrade, so firewall / dns etc. issues are likely.

Also all machines will have to repoint to the new server via the sims.ini and connect.ini files depending on how they are setup and whether it's reference via UNC, mapped drive etc. Even if you keep the same server name, there's usually somewhere you need to specify something.

Nothing is that complex or insurmountable. If you're happy with changing the sims.ini / connect.ini if necessary by script / GPO, then setup a differently named server as a test, and you can play around with it, go live when happy.

Completely agree. Moving SIMS istelf is fine, it's everything around it.

Are you using full or free SQL, if full then that will need installing and configuring. Do you have SLG and/or ADP or any other 'extras'
