NAS Recommendations or file server

Since our Buffalo Cloud station is not doing what we want and breaks everytime there is a powercut we are looking for a new storage area.

 

The cloud station allowed me to share drives but not in the way i wanted.

I need a nas box that will let me set propper permisions of files and folders from groups in active directory we use 2008 r2

 

Any reccomendations?

How much data are you looking to store? How frequently is it accessed? How many concurrent users? Does it need to be rackmounted or free standing?

 

The reason I ask is that in the past I have purchased a nearly new HP server from eBay with 6 SCSI drives for £250 or a brand new NAS with 12 SAS drives for £6000 depending on what I needed ir for.

At the moment we have a 2 tb but we are only using >250gb but this will grow fast if we continue to go teh way we have been.

Basicaly we are using it at the moment to store the kids work, teachers shared work and a shared area on there. Its only staffs personal files and students personal files that are on the server. The cloud station we are using at the moment can cope with the demand. dont know really how many concurrent users we have We have 100 pcs . Rackmounted or freestanding doesnt matter we can accomodate both.

In that case I would say it depends on what budget you have - start from there & buy the best you can afford.

 

The NAS we bought last summer was a Dell PowerVault NX3100 with 2 x Intel E5620 Xeons (2.4GHz); 24GB Memory; 2 x 300GB 10K SAS drives for the OS plus 12 x 600GB 15K SAS drives for storage. It came to £6K including an extra 4 port NIC, external SAS controller and a 3Yr NBD warranty.

If you're after something purely for throwing files at and nothing more, I would personally just buy a rackable chassis from say, xcase or servercase, buy some high capacity drives, mobo/ram/psu/cpu bla bla, and then just chuck it together - install truenas or another flavour of nas os variants
