My TV :'(

I have recently bought a second hand Samsung le40m87bdx. It was fine the first few days, but now randomly it does what's in the video linked below. There is sound, and you can cycle through the inputs. If you leave it alone for long enough it will suddenly decide it is going to work after all and then be fine until later in the day when you turn it on again, or until a few days later. I haven't yet found a pattern to it. Any help greatly appreciated!

Not had that error, but had to have mine repaired for the standby light always on error, cost me £100 to have it repaired by Samsung repair centre. Not the news you probably wanted.

Find their tellys a bit crap TBH. My one randomly turns itself on/off, changes volume or changes channel by itself. No idea what to do with it.

Have you got a neighbour like me who has recently discovered that he can change the channels etc on the tv in his neighbour's conservatory? ;-)

Haha if only. It's a problem with the capacitative (that a word???) touch controls on the telly short circuiting and triggering on their own. Very common flaw apparently.

looks like a service mode. see if you can cover the ir sensor with tape. Otherwise disconnect the front panel buttons. Remove all inputs and see if it does it. What happens with a single HDMI then turn the device on (see if the tv switches it'self) is it possible to get to the menu?

Tried that, even tried updating firmware. Been considering selling it TBH, it's a perfectly good telly if someone is willing to open the entire unit and snip a cable to the control panel (I'm not trying that!). It's way too big anyway.

Coincidentally - been to see my aged parents this weekend - they've got a Samsung and about 80% of the screen seems to be a slightly discoloured yellowy brown colour - any body got any ideas what this might be, or if it can be fixed?

My TV is mended There's a ribbon cable which carries the signal which the back cover touches. It's held in by glue, but doesn't need to be. When the TV got warm the glue softened slightly, and then the case warped pulling the cable out of it's hole. The TV man has stripped all the glue off and now the TV works perfectly!

 

Happy bunny, particularly as the guy didn't charge me to fix it!

Have you tried a firmware update? Even TV's from 4-5 years ago allow this.
