Homebrew access points

Hi guys!

 

i have 3 routers in my house acting as access points. Wireless doesnt like my house.

 

Is there a way to control my access points from my home server? Passwords etc? I was thinking about installing dd-wrt on them but not 100% sure its possible?

 

Any advance would be great.

Look on the dd-wrt wiki. There's a long list of what routers are compatible - if yours is on the list then you're good to go. Be aware, though, that it is not difficult to brick your APs when you flash the ROM. It's not difficult to do right either - I managed it

 

I found with some cheap kit we had in school that stability was better and I had more control. However, if it's just managing passwords, you should be able to do that across your home network anyway.

Just checked and their not :\ I cant even access them once iv turned off DHCP. I have to do a factory reset on them and change the password. Looks like that idea has gone down the pan

Not very. Its a 1970's house. This is what confuses me. Iv got one downstairs and one upstairs and one near the back door for the garden. All on different channels.

What make and model are the wireless routers? Are they 802.11g or n?

 

I have an Asus RT-N66U and this doesn't have any problems covering the entire house (which was built in the early 80's) despite there being thirteen other access points nearby.

I'd need three, the walls are solid wood, almost like a log cabin and so it absorbs RF like a sponge, kills cell signal too. That is with N as well and Tomato managing the hardware.

Not really. As it sounds like you're looking for a managed wireless solution I'd recommend a 3 pack of UniFi access points. They do 802.11n, those 3Com ones only do b and g and you need to have a controller also..

In all honesty Chris, All i want to do it be able to manange my 3 AP's from one location. I was hoping there was some software i could run on my home server to do this.

 

If not it looks like i have to do it the hard way.
