Are there any televisions which are better suited to Digital Signage (ie xibo) than others? I have heard some people say those with "hotel" mode are better but dont understand why? As xibo is free I dont want to pay over the odds for a display screen to go with it. Anything around £400 out there?

We have xibo running on PCs connected to:

19 inch monitor via VGA - Works well

24 inch LCD TV via VGA - works well

42 inch Plasma TV via VGA - works well

37 inch LCD via HDMI - works well

All worked out of the box by just connecting the PC to the TV / Monitor.

Hotel mode means that the outside buttons are disabled doesn't it? I know that some TVs offer a demo like mode where only the remote changes the channel etc, used to use it in PC world (back in the day) where possible cus otherwise people used to change it to odd channels and you might turn around and get Tekeshi's castle or something similar.

Dont plasma screens still suffer from screen burn these days with static images?

We just got LG 42LM660T-ZA with Raspberry Pi`s velcroed to the back of them.

Is there a client that works with Pi's?

Those TVs look to be around £700 - bit expensive for us as a display screen.

We use loads of 47" samsungs, with a PowerPoint on loop on a acer revo sending the signal over HDMI cat5 sender to multiple receivers attached to each TV.

Yes the plasma does suffer screen burn. I do a screen flash thingy app for a day that seems to work, but connecting to the PC and xibo works fine.

Sorry what warranty?

Depending on the manfacturer your warranty may be invalidated when using them for extended periods of time as a display, I just rang toshiba and aasked them and even if used 24 hours a day you would be covered under their standard warranty.

But commerical panels like the one I linked to tend to have a 3 year warranty covering the backlight as well which again may not be covered under a standard consumer warranty.

Ours wouldnt be on for anything like 24hrs a day unless someone forgot to switch it off but I would hope that if I set the connected PC to shutdown at the end of the day then the TV would auto shutoff when there was no input.

I just happened to ask the guy at Toshiba if their warranty still covered it if I used one 24 hours a day even 8 hours a day constant could invalidate a warranty it depends on the manafacturer.

If anyone is absolutely stupid enough to spend double the cost on a TV just because it doesn't have buttons or buttons are disableable, more fool them.

Hot glue gun is your friend.

I agree. if that is all the "hotel" mode means. Ours will show mostly powerpoints, photos, lunch menu and possibly sometimes bbc or sky news. So I guess a cheap £300 TV will do the job just as well.

We have several consumer grade LGs in place, and we also have an NEC public display panel too.

They are all working fine - with no screen burn on any of them (the oldest is now about 5 years old). They're all LCD panels too.

I would look for ones which go to sleep with no input I know that some LG's do this. I have my HP USFF machines set to shutdown at 6pm and wake up at 8am (via WOL) the TV then went to sleep while the PC is off.

Our college recently got 3 screens in and I believe they are by a company called Sahara. Not massively expensive for proper commerical PDPs.
