Ubuntu Server FQ Domain name not set

Is the machine using DHCP or not?

 

If it is, your DHCP server is misconfigured.

If it isn't, edit /etc/hosts and /etc/resolv.conf

not on DHCP no - static IP - thanks- I'll go take a looksie

Yeah, just check the entry for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. Mine looks like this:

 

127.0.0.1 offpc06l.carrhill.lancs.sch.uk localhost

Ah - bin there before

 

hosts contains:

 

127.0.0.1 localhost

 

 

The resolv.conf file contains:

 

search

nameserver

The order is important! For the 127.0.0.1 line move the 'localhost' entry to the end.
