Ignoring the 'Public Desktop'

Hi All,

 

I want to create a user account, that amongst other things loads up a desktop with just one Icon on it.... getting the icon there isnt a problem, however because this user account is potentially going to be used across hundreds of machines, whatever rubbish (Adobe Reader, IE, etc) happes to be on the public desktop of that PC also appears.

 

Is there a way to block public icons appearing? Or is there a better way?

We use folder redirection and redirect their start menu to a shared foler on the server.

 

You then deny them write access so they cant add stuff and all is good. Cant think of anything else that i did.

 

Either that or use group policy preference or a script to delete files out of the public desktop on all machines.

We use folder redirection here too. It's got to be the easiest way to maintain and control a users desktop over hundreds of screens. Both Start Menu and Desktop redirected and locked down so we can control the user experience.

Use group policy!

 

User > Admin Temp > Start Menu & Taskbar > Remove default programs link from start menu.

 

Although by the sounds of it, it has nothing to do with the desktop it does remove all "Public" profile start menu / desktop icons.

I think you read the wrong line in GPME, as its actually the one above called "remove common program groups from Start Menu"
