Is there any easy/free/cheap way of telling where a student user has been on the internet? Not because they are going to dodgy sites, just so that the teacher can point out that she knows when they haven't been doing the work they should have been doing?

free/cheap = Linux + squid proxy w/NTLM auth (there's PHP based log parsers that will make pretty reports of squids log files).

The Easy option would be some classroom 'control' software. I've used ABTutor in the past. Obviously you'll need to pay for this.

Does your county LA use smoothwall? They may have a license for you to use it in school, then point all students proxy into the smoothwall box and out of the box to the LA smoothwall box. Student machine--->local proxy -----> county proxy.

If you accept cookies, try ccleaner.

 

You can get a list of the cookies without deleting them. You may need to allow the exe and run it as the student though.

Do you have anything like AB-tutor or NetOp? They usually allow you to create policies to record these things, I know AB-Tutor does since that's what we use here. Another option might be for your web filter to authenticate against AD, it could then log users and the sites they visit. If you don't automatically delete their Internet history then I'm sure there a tools on the Internet that can interrogate their user profile and give you the list. Only other option I'm aware of is Securus that costs a bit and crashes twice daily.

We have NetOp basic which doesn't seem to do it. Web filter not run by us - its from the LA, unfortunately. Oh well

We have a log off script which I can PM you if you like? It makes a record of any user in the school and which websites they visit - time, date and PC name is also included.
