SharePoint 2010 Web Part

Hi everyone,

 

Please can anybody offer any advice on a SharePoint 2010 web part which will connect to a share on a file server and display the content on SharePoint? I have had a quick google and found a few that state they will do the job but wanted to see if anybody has got any experience of such web part.

 

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Are you trying to just display a list of files? If so, there is no need for anything special. Just drop a Page Viewer web part on your page, select Folder as the source, and then enter the UNC path to the file share.

You could to to, @rpwillis - Salamander My Docs and Shared Docs will do this for you; chargable - but at least you are working with a supported partner.

Thanks unixman_again that worked a treat. I am unsure whether SLT want to simply be able to view them or whether they want to be able to edit and rename documents. If they do then I will look at the software suggested by theScarfedOne

That will only work internally as it's the browser connecting to the file share, not the server.

Thanks rpwillis, I think in the near future we would open the sharepoint out to the internet so that teachers can login to it at home. Would the page viewer solution not work this way?

no all the page viewer is doing is exactly the same as you browsing the mapped drive or share in windows explorer but displaying it in a web browser.

Richard's web parts will allow you show them over the internet and they just work, never had one problem with them ever not one single problem/

An alternative is to create a document library within sharepoint and copy the files from the shared drive into the document library. You can then remap the share to the document library and the standard Sharepoint library functionality (including explorer view of the files) works over an internet connection from home.

That's a good option. I've really always considered our Shared Documents Web Part an interim strategy before you move your shared folders into SharePoint. Home directories are a bit more tricky though.

Sharepoint 2010 and I'm sure 2013 have a users home area "MySite" (on the top right it should be an option when you click on your name). It's should be just a matter of creating a document library within that area. You can map that as a network drive from a PC, so you could be creating home areas using sharepoint without anyone being any the wiser.
