Tricky Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Hi, I have a member of staff that has been using the Powerpoint 2010 feature of embedding web video (youtube in this instance) directly into Powerpoint. I'm told until recently this worked fine, but now when you try and play the embedded clip a popup appears from Windows Media Player that says "To play the selected item, you must install a later version of Adobe Flash Player". What I've tried (all with same Youtube clip); - You use the Youtube embed code with Powerpoint, so I saved that code locally and opened it in a browser to test the embed code, and that worked fine - In Media Player I went to Open URL and pasted the Youtube URL and it worked. - In Powerpoint, using "Link to a video file on a web site", copy the same embed code in and it just adds a black box to powerpoint, which gives the error above when you try and play it. So given that the embed code is fine, and Media Player can play the Youtube flash fine... I'm at a loss as to the solution. We're running Windows 7 x86, latest Adobe Flash Player. Any tips would be gratefully received.

I downloaded and installed this for those complaining before Christmas: Link: Windows 7 Codecs Pack for Windows Media Player WMP12 and Media Center They haven't complained since so I am guessing it's fixed? Worth a go for you?

Anyone got any embed code I could test?

If you didn't, as a bit of a work around that might prove useful, it looks like the PowerPoint embed feature doesn't like iFrames, which is why the new code doesn't work. However there is a free plugin that allows any webpage including iFrames to be shown live... LiveWeb - insert and update web pages real-time in PowerPoint Confusingly Powerpoint2010 doesn't have 'tools', so its 'file'->'options'-> 'manage...PowerPoint add-ins'->'go'-> 'add new...'-> browse to un-zipped download. Staff shouldn't need admin rights to add this. Once added, Liveweb should be added to the Insert ribbon. The upside of this method is that it should work if YouTube works, you can then use the YouTube URL codes to alter the video eg.10 Youtube URL Tricks You Should Know About edit: The downside is it's the whole page, not just the video although there may be a way of changing this with a bit of playing. Some may argue that there is little advantage over a simple link to open an external browser window, however it can be neater to stay within Powerpoint. I found out how to do it...get the NEW embed code from YouTube eg. Delete the tags so your left with this... ww.youtube.com/embed/-QSUUecYxmE?rel=0&allowfullscreen Note the added '&' Now use this for the liveweb plugin... Thanks So if you wish to a)autoplay and b) have a video only view, similar to 'full screen' but in a window, ie. without the title bar and hiding the play bar here's how to do it.... The YouTube plugin only likes 'classic' YouTube URLs so revert back to my previous instructions and use the 'LiveWeb' plugin. Once that is installed get a NEW embed code from your chosen video Delete sections so it looks like this http://www.youtube.com/embed/kh29_SERH0Y?rel=0 Now add this to the end http://www.youtube.com/embed/kh29_SERH0Y?rel=0[color="#FF0000"]&allowfullscreen&autoplay=1[/color] and it should autoplay in a nice neat window. You can still use other code so for example if you want to play from a specific section.... http://www.youtube.com/embed/kh29_SERH0Y?rel=0&allowfullscreen&autoplay=1[color="#FF0000"]#t=2m30s[/color] Looping has been made a bit more complicated since they changed the code, you now need to tell it what 'playlist' to loop, even if that is a playlist of one video... http://www.youtube.com/embed/qBNmY7S0BG8?rel=0&allowfullscreen&autoplay=1[color="#FF0000"]&loop=1&playlist=qBNmY7S0BG8[/color] Note the repeat of the video ID code from the original URL Edited March 13, 2013 by Obiwan

I assume you'd need the plugin on any PC's that needed to display the Powerpoint presentation in question? That's the bit that puts me off with these solutions. As soon as teachers share material in their department, or others want to achieve the same thing, or teachers just swap rooms and want to use said Powerpoint you then have a level of confusion and IT support requests. All for something that should work with stock Powerpoint.

For reference there are two occurrences of the ';version=3&' code and both need removing. Adding in the commands such as '&autoplay=1' still works. Playback seems to be smoother as well.

I read somewhere that you can solve the issue by downloading a new video software. I even tried your old modified code above and it wouldn't play in Powerpoint. Am I missing something here, I assume the modified code above still works for others?

Just tested it, your right, removing the code seems to have stopped working, Google must have tweaked something. I've found a new work around, just change 'version=3' to 'version=2' on both occurrences in the code. Should work.
