Visual Studio 2015 Community edition in campus computing labs
Tricky replied to disk's topic in Educational Software
Does it retain the Microsoft account details for other users on the machine? or do the students have to login to the shared account each time? -
In the Microsoft VLSCR website, if you go to Licences > Rel Summary > select active agreement > product keys Do you have the Windows 7 VLK there? That's the one for the server.

Hi all, We have a portable PA system with active speakers we use in our Sports Hall and sometime outside. For the most part it's fine for it's purpose, but we've been asked to replace the Mic to make it more omni directional and not require being so close to it. So currently we're using a Shure SM58 microphone, it's fine if you are directly infront of it and within a few inches. That's not unreasonable but the concern being brought to me is when you have several people behind a lectern it's not loud enough. We obviously position the mic stand so it's close but still get complaints. So my question is, is just a replacement mic the answer? if so any suggestions for specific models? Also will a more sensitive mic give us feedback problems? Typically the speakers are 3-4 metres either side (in-line) with the mic stand). Thanks

Has anyone dealt with .Net errors when pupils try to launch via AXE's program? "Application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy."

Weird AV problem, is it the audio file or something else?
Tricky replied to Tricky's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Thanks Marci, what you are saying rings true. The reason I even mentioned the mp3 itself is that other mp3's and (audio sources) played without distortion. Will investigate the wiring as you suggest. -
Hi all, We had a weird problem yesterday, when playing certain mp3's in our hall we had lot of distortion. Here is an overview of the setup; HP PC with onboard audio connecting to; - Stereo Amp & Mixing desk or - Mono Amp with multiple inputs then to the large wall speakers obviously. Testing other audio sources on either Amp worked fine. The issue; With a few specific mp3's there would be significant distortion on the Stereo Amp, but when switching over to the mono amp it was fine. While the hardware is probably a factor my assumption was an issue with the stereo separation in the mp3 file itself. I later found the source of the mp3 was ripped from Youtube, so while 320bps it's not exactly professional grade! What I did next was open the mp3 in Audacity, the problem remained when hitting play. However, I then panned the channel in Audacity to Left and Right and found the further off center you moved it the better it sounded. Essentially, 100% left or right and it sounded perfect. I'm not savvy enough in audio technologies to know what specifically could cause this. I tried converting to mono within Audacity but that left me with no sound at all, again unless I panned left or right. While I can to some extent just blame the mp3 and move on, I've love to know what is going on here! I've stuck the mp3 on the link below; http://www.filedropper.com/begodsbydaniellerosewlyrics Cheers PS. If anyone knows a better place to post this please let me know.

You may have sorted this by now, but have you updated the BIOS? There was an update that fixed that issue for me.

Thanks sted, yeah I'm not expecting the Store to be a great loss. I was aware of how to customise the Start screen as that's how this whole thread came about. My query to Rob was thinking he might have discovered other tips and tricks I'd not heard of.
-
Managed to figure this out in the end - was getting tunnel vision and missing the Software Assurance filter on the downloads, kept going straight for Windows. @RobBaxter That sounds very exciting, may I ask your motivations for going to Windows 8? Also if you have any resources collected to help with customising W8 for your environment I'd very interesting to see them. Some of the Metro features require the user to have a Microsoft account, do you have a way around that or just not using those features?
-
NB. I put Solved in the thread title to avoid confusion for people searching the forum. Clearly I was wrong about EES access to the Enterprise edition. That said, I've not managed to get it via SA or Technet still. I've raised it with the company that provides our MS licensing and will see what they can do.
-
Do you mean 18th October? but surely Windows 8 should be on there now? Had a good hunt but not luck. Tried this too but although my activated Technet account still says "There is no subscription associated with your Microsoft account". Could really do with a final build rather than the preview I've been testing with too! In Software Assurance I have; 24x7 Problem Resolution Support, E-Learning – Applications, E-Learning – Servers , E-Learning – Systems , Home Use Program , Office Multi Language Pack , Planning Services , Problem Resolution Support (SAB 2.0) , TechNet Plus Direct , TechNet SA Subscription Services , Training Vouchers , Windows 7 Enterprise , Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs Media/Download , Windows Vista Enterprise Media/Download , Windows Vista Ultimate Media/Download Should there be a Windows 8 benefit listed?
-
Thanks for the replies, I hope you are right! I've had a quick look on the Software Assurance part of the site and can only see Windows 7, not 8 or 8.1. Although if it's not under 'Windows' as you say 3s-gtech, then maybe I'm in the wrong place.

Well to be clear, we have the Microsoft Open Value Subscription-Education Solutions Agreement which is the EES offering for small to medium academic customers - to use their words. On the Microsoft licensing website we only have the Pro edition of Windows 7 and windows 8. This didn't used to be the case, but I think it must have been when we changed to the EES licence.
-
Hi, Hopefully this is not a duplicate topic. My impression is that the new Start screen control in Windows 8.1 will only be available on the Enterprise edition, and our EES licence will only give us the Pro edition. I can only hope this is a mistake, because paying for an EES academic licence and then to hear your not getting one of the features our environment requires is very concerning. Unfortunately I'm in the position of wanting to prep some Windows 8 hybrid laptops and get them in use asap. I held back for 8.1 knowing how much simpler it was going to make the deployment. Any one have further insight? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/enterprise/products-and-technologies/windows-8-1/compare/default.aspx Thanks

[ms office - 2010] Problem linking data between two spreadsheets
Tricky replied to Tricky's topic in Office Software
Found one option - not entirely sure why it works. If I embed a spreadsheet in Powerpoint, then make a connection to my data spreadsheet with a few references to cells in the other spreadsheet it updates in real time. Quite why it works like this, and not between instances of Excel I'm not sure. -
[ms office - 2010] Problem linking data between two spreadsheets
Tricky posted a topic in Office Software
So we have a Sports Day spreadsheet, and on the day I would like to run a second monitor which would display the current leaders to anyone that wanted to see. To do this I would have my normal data entry spreadsheet, then a second spreadsheet that just reads the data from the other for display purposes on the second monitor. The issue I'm hoping for ideas on, is in order to run Excel on two monitors, you have to open two instances. When you do this the cells that link into the other spreadsheet no longer autoupdate. It still works if you go into the UI Ribbon > Data > Edit Links > Update values, but that's not very practical on the day. Any ideas? -

I tried it a while ago and found the metro apps wouldn't download even with a wpad setup. Since then we have a transparent proxy which got around the problem.

Could anyone tell me if OSTicket or RT support multiple support teams so we can separate our site maintenance guys jobs from our IT team's?

We've had this issue, wasn't always Users and Groups like yours, sometimes they would get hung up on other group policy preferences. I'm not sure we've seen the last of it but certainly managed to improve the situation. Basically did two things, went through the relevant GPO's with a fine tooth combs checking for any thing it could be getting stuck on. Such as wrong paths and non-working scripts. Second was enabling 'logging and tracing' on a particular suite, which I think is a 2008 R2 feature. (Policies>Admin Temp>System>Group Policy>Logging and tracing). Then after a machine has done a 'slow' boot you can look in the client logs (C:\ProgramData\GroupPolicy\Preference\Trace\). They don't make easy reading but the key thing was seeing which policy's were getting processed and then checking the timestamps to see what was taking a long time. If you haven't already it would be worth using 'Group Policy Results' in the 'Group Policy Manager' on a problem PC. This might flag up some policy processing issues. Hope that helps.

[ms office - 2010] Problems embedding Youtube clips into Powerpoint
Tricky replied to Tricky's topic in Office Software
This has been working ever since but can't get it to work today. I even tried your old modified code above and it wouldn't play in Powerpoint. Am I missing something here, I assume the modified code above still works for others? -

Tricky replied to Tricky's topic in Office Software
I assume you'd need the plugin on any PC's that needed to display the Powerpoint presentation in question? That's the bit that puts me off with these solutions. As soon as teachers share material in their department, or others want to achieve the same thing, or teachers just swap rooms and want to use said Powerpoint you then have a level of confusion and IT support requests. All for something that should work with stock Powerpoint. -
