Compatibility mode with 256 colors

In our elementary lab one of the education games they use needs 256 colors. I went under compatibility mode and set the program to run in 256 colors and it runs with no issues. However, when I exit the game the computer stays in 256 colors and doesn't switch back to its normal display. I figured it would automatically switch back since I only have the program running in that mode so I'm stumped at this point. Appreciate any advice, as usual I'm sure it's just a small setting somewhere that I'm missing. Thanks!
