Apologies for the short notice but I have a meeting in an hour about this.

 

We have 32 i-pads which the teacher now wants Pages, Keynotes and Numbers installed.

 

Has anyone here used those apps on i-pads in a purely windows environment on multi-user ipads?

 

If so, how do the students save the work?

We dont use Ipads here (at the moment at least) but ICloud / Dropbox / Emailing themselves could be options.

Google apps works perfectly across all of the devices on our domain without the need for addons like quickoffice and pages.

Unless pages etc gets round the limitation IOS only allows uploading or attaching of photos and videos. So no way to get the files off other than maybe a Dropbox type app

We've set up WebDAV both here and at a local jr school and it works quiet well. Another alternative to Pages, etc, is the Google Drive app.

Does WebDAV require authentication (AD or otherwise) & does it cache the users logged in WebDAV session?

I've set up WebDAV at numerous schools. Have a search of the forums to find what I posted.

 

You may also find it useful to host a proxy.pac file in IIS so the iPads can talk to the World Wide Web

We have a .pac file in place.

 

One thing we can't get working through Link2ICT is Meraki. We can register them everywhere else except from behind Link2ICT proxy. Case is still open (and so is just about every port known to man!!!!)

Funnily enough I've looked at that recently too. You need to open a million and one ports. They also suggested opening 1000 ports, I think it was 63-64,000 which I think is crazy. I hope it's a typo, but I'll soon find out.

i have meraki in the school i support, i dont manage the smoothwall that is in place but i did get the below information, hope this helps!

So, you would need to allow outbound access for any remote IP address, and filter by ports. So for your iOS devices, you'd have to allow from any source, to any destination, for all TCP and UDP traffic through the ports listed on our firewall configurations (443; 2195; 2196; 5223). Basically, while the IPs can change, the ports will never change.

That just makes creating firewall rules even more difficult if that's the case.

 

It would be better to create rules to an IP range or to a URL. Opening the ports for anything isn't a good idea. This is exactly how the likes of malware or other nasties can get onto a network.

i agree completely, unfortunatly i inherited the Ipads and had to provide a solution without any cost. this was the only solution, except spending half a day updating the ipads every week.

Got one of their free MR12 Access Points and that works fine here after Link did the changes at their end.

 

Trying one of the Meraki switches at the moment, so currently awaiting the firewall change to see if that has any luck working.

i havent got any meraki hardware and mine is working. Generally speaking its down to your Firewall or Proxy.

A few months ago I got the free AP you get for sitting through a sales pitch webinar. When I plugged that in and added the device in the dashboard it said it couldn't communicate with it. Once Link opened required ports on the firewall for the IP address of the AP, it appeared in the dashboard and allowed me to do all the various stuff I needed.

Depending on what Meraki Product you are trying to use depends on what the requirements. So hardware is involved to manage to product (obviously if you have a meraki AP or switch then you need those)
