Can you quantify the mileage per monthand the model of the car / engine ? and what a tub is?

Travel 32 miles each way to work every day

 

4 litres of oil ish per month and a half maybe?

All sorts of options on ebay, including Bluetooth OBD2 for use with "Torque and others" on android.

 

Official tools are always best..

 

Vauxhall - Tech2

jaguar - IDS/SDD

landrover - IDS/SDD

Ford - IDS/SDD

VW - VAG-COM

Etc....

And Generic OBD2 leads...

 

I am getting a collection as one tool does not fit all.

If there is no sign of oil on the road then you have a serious consumption problem. 1L in 1000 Miles would be normal on a high performance turbo charged car, 1L should last 5-6K in any other car so 4L in 600Miles is 40 times more than it should be!

What can I say its a turbo charged high performance super vehicle.

 

Its had a good ride tbh, 150000 miles isn't so bad for a car of its age!

I have had cars with 150k that use no oil at all. My present one has 130K and not using anything significant. the Nissan engine is a modern one so should eb good for 200K+ if looked after.

Likewise, I had a 'dreaded' Vectra which I liked and kept till 200k kms. It did not burn or leak any noticeable amount of oil. It was the 2.5l though which were apparently better.

Some dodgy garage owners there then. Dead easy to work on and permanent fixes are doable without having the engine out of the bay. If I can do it in a few hours outside my house then I'm sure anyone with half a brain can too! (I'm not a mechanic.) I do know they're the most important modern petrol engine.

 

Yes, i advised someone how to replace one last weekend when their timing belt snapped. He wasn't a mechanic either. However if the head gasket has gone then the head should be measured and skimmed, something a little tricky to do on a drive.

Lol yeah its not like I want it to use the oil! It definitely is though! It could come down to the fact that it was a hire car originally, for the first 3 years of its life.

 

It's done ok though, never failed an MOT. (In the voice of Jeremy Clarkson) UNTIL NOW!

Ok update time...

 

All fluid containers look ok. Coolant low but not empty. Oil a nice black colour both under the cap and on the dip stick. Pipes from rad to engine look like they've seen better days.

 

Drove back to Norwich, 15mi, with no obvious problems other than a bit of steam at the lights as I went through the city.

 

Mechanic is going to change the hoses tomorrow and refill the coolant. Told me off for not topping up with water. Apparently the system could be empty but will not empty the reservoir. He also said the headgasket may/may have gone, which is £500 - ouch.

 

Fingers crossed tomorrow that the new pipes and top up fixes it!
