Praxis Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 We have a set of iPad's for children to use and each teacher has their own iPad as well, they are all set up with Mosyle with a different configuration for each group. One of our teacher's has set up a project that requires students to scan QR codes around the school, these scan fine on teacher iPad's but not on the student's. I have checked in the camera preferences and the "Scan QR Codes" option is enabled, I have checked if filtering was somehow causing it but it is not. It must be one of the settings in the MDM. Anyone have any ideas?
Brimstone Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 If you've got the latest version of iOS Apple have slightly changed the QR Reader. You can only read quick response QR codes with the camera app Have you tried using the QR Reader App that's also in iOS, you may need to add this to control centre on the iPad?
Praxis Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 I did not know that! Looking in control centre though and I don't see QR Reader listed. The iPad's are currently on 14.1

Praxis Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 Yep, looked there and couldn't see it to add it, unless I'm missing something obvious (probably)
Brimstone Posted November 20, 2020 Posted November 20, 2020 Hi again, Having looked more into this there appears to be some issues with QR Code Scanning in iOS14. https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/663921 May be worth raising a support ticket with Mosyle as other MDM's appear to be having the same issue.
Praxis Posted November 20, 2020 Author Posted November 20, 2020 (edited) Thanks for looking into this for me. What an annoying issue, I will do as you suggested but in the mean time I'll see if a QR app will sort it. Edit: I have installed a QR app onto the iPad's and that's working great Edited November 20, 2020 by Praxis
dommo Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 If you are using Home layouts / Allowed apps add "barcode scanner" to the homescreen (it's listed as a native app). This will allow you to add QR scanner in control center.
Bev Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 I am having the same issue with JAMF and I can't see a way to add the barcode scanner to the home screen.
Bev Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Can anyone recommend a QR code reader app that isn't full of ads, and opens links in a real browser (rather than their internal browser). thanks
dommo Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 (edited) @Bev I haven't come across this issue with JAMF. Can you see if "scan QR codes" is enabled in the Camera setting on a device? Do you use app whitelists or blacklists in you restrictions profile? Try adding com.apple.barcodesupport.qrcode in a whitelist (or ensure it is not in a blacklist) Edited May 13, 2021 by dommo i
Bev Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 We use a layout which overrides the blacklist / whitelist, it in effect creates it's own white list. You can't add com.apple.barcodesupport.qrcode to the whitelist as it's not an app that can be selected. Scan QR Codes is on, and the camera does search for and find the QR code but it doesn't open the link. The control panel Code scanner is not visible and can't be activated. It is discussed on JAMF Nation so others are also having this same issue. https://www.jamf.com/jamf-nation/discussions/37810/in-camera-qr-code-scanner-not-working-since-ios-14-2
