Volume Purchase Program for Education / VPP for Education Guide (10/2013) / Migrating from redemption codes to managed distribution

 

System requirements

Managed distribution requires iOS 7 or later or OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later. Devices that use a prior version of iOS or OS X can't be assigned apps or books through managed distribution using MDM.

 

MDM is required for managed distribution. Make sure you have an MDM solution in place and it’s linked to your VPP account before you request migration. Profile Manager in OS X Server (Mavericks) supports managed distribution. For other MDM solutions, check with your MDM provider to ensure they support VPP managed distribution under iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks v10.9.

 

Each user much have a personal Apple ID to use apps and books assigned through managed distribution.

 

Requesting migration

If you reviewed the requirements and want to migrate from redemption codes to managed distribution for all previous purchases made with your VPP account, submit your request using the online business or education support request form. Select “Migrate redemption codes to managed distribution” in the menu at the top of the form.

So at the moment I have the VPP manager and facilitator accounts to buy the apps, and then have a different single apple ID signed into the ipads for pushing out the apps with codes via meraki.

 

Will I now need to generate a seperate apple ID for every single ipad we have?

This is a nightmare for our school. We aren't on a 1:1 device basis. Seems Apple wants the world to be 1:1. We've got a load of MacBook Airs and iPad that everyone in the school needs to access. Surely we can have apps on a device basis rather than user.

Thats really not what apple are about. They design their products to be used on a personal basis.

 

Its a really good idea imo but we will have to wait a few years before it gets that way I think. Pain in the backside in the meantime!

It looks like you can still just download a spreadsheet of codes and import them into AC as normal, as well as the managed distribution option. Hope they keep this option available too as like others most Schools I deal with use iPads as shared devices.
