Chrome no longer playing flash

Recently websites in Chrome that use Flash have been prompting users to install or allow Flash which is causing problems for our primary schools we support. I have installed the Chrome ADMX templates and set the GPO to allow all sites to automatically to run Flash which used to work fine until recently. Has anyone else seen this?

hi yes, I'm getting the same stuff too, a quick workaround is to go to

chrome://settings/content/flash

you can add the site to the allow list

Thanks Steven, that's fine locally but I would like to have this configured via GPO to save our users having to do it themselves. It was working fine until recently, I can only think Google Chrome has updated itself and stopped this from working?

Yes, had to warn the staff that it's now going End of Life by 2020 and due to security reasons, Google Chrome, etc. are not enabling it by default.

 

Informed the users via e-mail to enable a Flash site, do the following:

 

To the left of the web address, click Lock or Info button.

To the right of "Flash," click the Arrows.

Choose Always allow on this site.

Reload the page.

Thanks DJ, currently that's greyed out as its configured via GPO. Would it better do disable the GPO policy then so users can manage this themselves given that this setting no longer works anyway?

An update to Chrome (62) has changed the way Flash is allowed to run automatically. You'll notice swf files no longer work in Chrome either, which I still haven't resolved.

 

To allow Flash to run for all sites via GPO, add http://* and https://* to the "Allow the Flash plugin on these sites" policy. Google/Google Chrome/Content Settings.

 

ETA: I also changed the Default Flash setting to "Allow all sites to automatically run the Flash Plugin" in Google/Google Chrome/Extensions but think the change above is what 'fixed' it for us. Of course allowing flash to run on all sites isn't ideal, but in a primary setting, trying to get a class of 6 years olds to add sites to the allow list isn't easy!

Thanks Ant, that worked like a charm. I appreciate the security risk but your absolutely right on the practical side of things for Primary schools, lets just hope websites start moving to HTML 5 as soon as they can.

Not sure if it's any help, but yesterday I was asked to help with a flash site for early years kids (years 1-2) and to make it as easy as possible - I managed to extract the swf from the site and used swf to exe to enable it to be shared from a network location. Worked like a charm

Just to add to this, it needs the latest ADMX and ADML files released on the 10 Nov.

Thanks all for your comments, the GPO is working and maybe I need to start a new thread but has does anyone know how to auto allow Flash in Microsoft Edge. I've got the ADMX templates installed for my version of Windows 10 but I cannot see any setting to auto allow Flash? Its a lot easier for our users to enable it compared to Flash in Chrome so I'm not too worried.
