EssentialRug Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 Hi all, Just wondering what you guys do with Chromebooks that have reached their Auto Update Expiration. Do you offer these devices to parents? If so, are you wary of coming across as though you are happy to endorse/supply machines that may not have the latest security updates? Any opinions/reccomendations on what to do with these devices would be much appreciated! Many thanks!
mavhc Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 There are very few Chrome OS vulnerabilities https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-list/vendor_id-1224/product_id-20320/Google-Chrome-Os.html So at that point the question is, will the device have https://www.aboutchromebooks.com/news/lacros-vs-chrome-and-chrome-os-on-chromebooks/ which means Chrome gets updated when Chrome OS doesn't 3
dhicks Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 Just wondering what you guys do with Chromebooks that have reached their Auto Update Expiration. We have 170 Asus C100P Chromebooks - they should have been retired last summer, but we've kept them going for another year. Our plan (so far) this summer is to move them to all be used in our junior school (Reception to Year 3), limited to whitelist-only websites. I plan to have them boot straight into a guest session and load up a start page with links to all the sites they can use, so no logon needed. The ability to have a newer, up-to-date browser would be handy, so I'll keep an eye on the project mavhc linked to above. 1
Danp Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 We have some HP Chromebook 14 G3 that are on 77.0.3865.105. These are fine for light internet browsing. I'd be happier if they were updated a bit though 1
DavR Posted July 5, 2021 Posted July 5, 2021 We're a few years away from this yet, but we'd probably be looking to keep using them til we can't, unless there is a specific security threat beyond just being out of date. 1
