Laptop reboots instead of shutting down!

ARGH!

 

Lenovo T61, i've put XP Pro on it.

 

When i shut it down, it pretends it has and then reboots!

 

I've unticked automatic reboot but there is no blue screen error. I have had this on other the other 3 machines which are exactly the same, which makes me think its a XP driver thing, but i've usually managed to crack it! But for some reason im missing something on this one.

 

Is there anything that can give me a clue!

Have you got the necessary ACPI drivers installed? They are usually a bugger to find for XP on modern laptops.

Try updating the BIOS. It might have a problem understand the shutdown command coming from Windows. Updating it might fix it.

Bit of an old fix but, do you have any Roxio burning software installed? There was a known bug which caused XP to reboot instead of shutting down:

Ah thanks will try these monday. Wasn't thinking outside the box and was focusing on it being a Lenovo driver thing not a general error!

But having a quick look i think ive tried all of them....apart from the memory dump..

The other thing you could try is disabling ACPI wake operations in the BIOS for stuff like mdem ring and WOL. Sometimes XP does not put stuff in the right state to shutdown so it will fire back up again.

After updating this, rebooting and logging back in then ensure the power settings are set correctly

 

Open Power Manager -> Manage Settings -> Global Power Settings -> Choose your preferred setting for the start menu power button(s)

 

Then attempt to shutdown and see if it shuts down or reboots

Reboots instead of Shut down when in safe mode, turned off anything remotely power management like in bios.

 

Not sure i can see that option mac....

 

Tempted to take an image from my collegues as hers works fine!

Hmph....even after putting an image on it from a another T61 it still reboots....is it a hardware thing after all?

Have you tried changing the RAM in it? I know it doesn't sound likely but I have seen so many weird problems caused by iffy RAM. I'm running out of thoughts. Do you have a Live Linux based CD? Try booting to that OS and see if it will shutdown then. That at least eliminates Windows issues.

if you still have your image is it worth trying that image on the pc that works?

Is wake on LAN disabled?

 

If it isn't, try that. I've had some issues like this and that was the cause.

 

It's a BIOS setting, it should be unaffected by loading a different image. [if I'm remembering it right...]
