Facebook App privacy changes

My android tablet has asked for permission to update facebook and I am not happy... it may be about to be uninstalled. I suppose they are at least being open about reading every SMS message, not that I have any on a tablet but you can see my issue. Imust have look to see what the iOS app is up to.

Users should be able to decline aspects/features of application if they dont agree with impact on privacy without having completely stop using the app.

Did anyone find out why Facebook now wants access to text messages? I've not updated yet and am curious as to why it needs it.
