If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

Update time.   And a small update at that.     Yesterday was spent upgrading the nodes and the controller, I've doubled the RAM so it now stands at 1GB RAM per node, and 4GB RAM on the controller.   Everything else is standard.     As the test, I'm thinking of possibly installing Quake and seeing how it runs. Lag, FPS [frames per second... not first person shooter.], graphics quality, etc.   First it'd be installed on the controller and tested without nodes, then with the nodes connected.

BETT 2012

Recycling bins filling up, spam folders overflowing. Yes it's that time of year again when you come into work with a bag full of leaflets and find half of them make their way into the bin. BETT 2012 is finished and the dust is settling in the Olympia Exhibition Hall for the last time with BETT 2013 scheduled for the ExCeL Centre instead.   Click here for pciturs on Google+.   This year saw the return of the Edugeek stand to provide tech staff with an amusing diversion in the form of a comfy so

Systems Center: The Lie of Integration

This is entirely a rant, and only tangentially instructional. It is related to the virtualization malarkey I’m doing at the moment, but won’t actually help anyone set up a similar infrastructure. It might save someone a bit of brain-ache in the future, but mostly, I’m just annoyed.   To recap briefly: I want shiny new virtual servers in a high-availability cluster, and to do that, I have 2 beefy DL380 G7s and a single DL160 G6 to act as a physical DC and administer the VMs. There’s an LTO5 tape

Stage 0 - complete

I've checked all hardware, chosen the OS [Debian] and the MPI [OPEN-MPI], I've got a bit of documentation so I know what I'm doing [slightly].   But there's one thing I forgot to check...   CHECK THERE'S ENOUGH ROOM!!   Which there isn't... Blargh!   I'm still doing it though. A couple of powerstrips [and a reposition of the laptop trolley] should be sufficient.   As usual, any suggestions let me know.

Money in Schools (ICT and generally) aka Vanity Projects

This blog post comes courtesy of a thread elsewhere on Edugeek as well as ideas brought up from one of the schools I support.   I'll start small. A couple of weeks ago, one of my HT's attended training at a local academy. This academy rolled out iPads for all it's pupils. Naturally he liked the look of this but with a diminutive budget, asked what I could do along the same sort of lines but for half a class. The logistics were easy enough, just under £6k buys 16 ipads, a dock/box/sync/charger

CODENAME: PROJECT BORG

Cluster server is go.   At least premission has been given, and the powers that be think the LAN MMO idea is a good one. [still trying to find one... here's hoping BETT can help.]     For those who are curious, for this experiment I will be using:     10 RM F-series as nodes [Which I can't find full specs for...]   Some sort of ex-admin Dell as the controller. We've got a couple sitting about.   Cisco Catalyst 2950 [24 switch]   OS will more than likely be some sort of Linux as getting lic

Virtual Insanity: Part One - Lets Get Physical

This is the start of a lot of writing, because if I put it down in words, it'll make me believe that I'm in control and I know what I'm doing. I promise you, I'm not and I don't. Most of this will be disjointed sentences adapted from my hasty notes and vague memories, but some of it might prove useful, or at least entertaining. I'm writing it mostly because I enjoy writing and I need to practice more, and I'm cross-posting to my actual blog because I really should put some content there.   It's

Roll on Saturday

I will be at BETT 2012 and can't wait for it to come. Partly for "professional development," partly to see you Edugeekers again and partly to restock my desk with a bagful of freebie office supplies.   My freebie-fu was weak last year. With any luck it has since improved!

10 node cluster server.

I'm thinking of making one at work.   Think of it as CPD, if you like.     We have 10 old RM computers [F-series] just sitting there gathering dust.   We also have 4 switches sitting around, plus a lot of various cables.     Our head would probably let me do it... But, I can't think of a use for it...

esafetylive 2012 now NATIONAL!!!

Annual esafetylive events to be held in London and Edinburgh for 2012... bookings now open at http://www.esafetylive.com - aimed at all who work with children and young people - workshops by Facebook, OFSTED, Childnet and CEOP amongst many others.   As they are normally only run in the South West, I would really appreciate any help in spreading the word to schools across rest of UK - updates will be tweeted on a regular basis at @UK_SIC   If anyone wants further info to distribute amongst th

What a waste of time...

I can't believe I just spent over half an hour changing my desktop wallpaper...   I had the wallpaper on a USB... It just wouldn't display properly.   Set it to "tiled", works fine. "Center"... Still good.   Stretch? nope.   The colour borks and it becomes worthless.   This is what the wallpaper looks like, for those that are interested.   [NOTE - not the actual one that borked. This one borks differently.]   Seems, in my haste while saving it, I didn't save it properly.   It was a .bmp

How to - System Centre Configuration Manager - Part 1 (Pre-req's)

Ive had a lot of contact from people asking about installing System Centre Configuration Manager (SCCM) – having all sorts of issues with it. Normally – this install and config to the basics of doing a build and capture, through to the end game of it deploying your network clients for you!   Im not going to cover AD or DHCP – other than saying have 2 accounts setup ready to use, something like SCCMAdmin and SCCMClient. Make sure that you arent running SCCM on the same server as DHCP; and if at

System Centre Operations Manager 2007 on Server 2008 R2 with SQL Cluster 2008 R2

Ok – so, most of you know I love System Centre products – and after getting SCCM (System Centre Configuration Manger) setup nicely (I will blog on this, as lots of people seem to have a problem getting this up and running in less than a day) – it was time to play with its partner in crime SCOM (System Centre Operations Manager).   Introduction What exactly is Operations Manager? Well, it revolves around an agent on the computer to be monitored. The agent watches that computer, grabbing and col

Using Dates in SIMS Reporting

When you output dates in SIMS with the Reporting tool, the results will come out as text and cannot be converted into a proper date with the number format window. This is a fix used in the SIMS Standard Portrait template to prevent Excel from throwing a fit and entering the data incorrectly. You can modify the template and remove the fix but that is best left to advanced users, there is a simpler option.   Let's take a date in the format "1 March 2012" in cell C2. You can use the DATEVALUE form

Sharepoint in Education - the social intranet (Setup: Part 2)

The last article covered some of the rationale and an overview - this is a bit more of the "how to". Remember, there are two elements to MySite – the first showing your feed, all activity from your linked people (a la friends). The second, your profile.   Now – the problem comes with the logic behind setting this up. In Education – we tend to like everything being accessible through one entry point. This will usually be though a firewall or gateway device.   MySites - the standard config issue

Sharepoint in Education - the social intranet (Introduction: Part 1)

When I first started writing on Edugeek, many will remember me as one of the Sharepoint gang. My more recent writings may have convinced some of you that I was less interested in it now…but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sharepoint 2010 is a brilliant product – and one which could be put to great use in Schools and Colleges.   The Rationale As IT Professionals, we are constantly battling against the students (and the staff in some cases) with Social Networking. We are also in a battl

Remote Desktop for Thin Client… Part 2!

Introduction This article is a continuation, and update on the changes made since the original article published earlier in the year.   A bit of background to start with… in Summer 2011, I started a big modernisation project at the Academy I took over at. When I started, we were still on Windows XP across the desktops. To take us to Windows 7 presented a problem – the specs of some machines prevented it. I had a significant number of Celeron 1.6’s and 1.9’s. Although I tested Windows 7 on thes
