Surely it'll be much cooler to build a set of shelves to have them all blinking away like some monstrous piece of wall art... then have the power strips mounted down one side and the network ports down the other like some crazed DIY server rack.

That's stage... 6?

Heat can be an issue with clusters build in the DIY way - make sure that there is enough room capacity to dissipate the heat and enough airflow. Also make sure that one exhaust doesn't become the next's air supply as that's not good.

I'm thinking of making a "twin towers" set up. The nodes will be stacked in 2 piles of 5, as they're meant to be horizontal it'll be stable. [No leaning tower of server.]

 

There will be just over the width of one computer between the towers. With the switch and controller in between. The controller is a vertical desktop, with all fans at the back and no vents on either side.

 

However... I still don't have the space for it. I'm thinking this project will fail before it even gets properly started.

or - drop the number of nodes until they can find homes - if it's on a vlan, then the nodes can sit anywhere really.

See, that would be the smart option.
