1. Not trying to take the bored by force, but a majority of ex students are decent people and he may volunterly make the account a admin...... a mojority of youtube videos that feature teachers in get taken down, when i politly ask.
2. Facebook How do you guys suggest managing groups that are created by (ex)pupils? Have you set up a HS network for the pupils to use? example - big group of around 750 members, uses copyrighted school logo, discussion board has a topic on teachers with bad and insulting things being said. Also created by a Ex-pupil. The way I would go about it would be create a account (using webmaster or something as its name), contact group creator and ask for the removal of said topic, and that he administors the boards more closely (suggesting he should make you a admin). If he refusses put in a copyright/invasion of privacy complaint.
3. ways to center in css is put it in a span container and then position it fix its size, then left it 50% the take half of its size away (not sure how, i think you use margin-left or padding-left with neg values). A quick google search should pull up instructions.
4. I followed sysmans guide to the letter yet it doesn't work, im using the rt_rokwebify template. Could it be that the CSS and index page hasn't been told how to work it? if so has someone got the code to do it? I did a quick google and found one that sort of got it working but menus where flying all over the place P.S page is http://www.moss-design.org.uk (I'm testing it for the school) - please ignore anything below the breadcrumb... I haven't got that far yet....
5. So i've just finished positioning stuff for my site \o/ but I have coded it in a widescreen and on IE7. As far as browser checks thats easy enough, but does anyone know a tool either a joomla ext or a third party that shows previews in diffrent size screens and res?
6. I can't stand teaching myself like that (although sometimes it necessary..). I'm more of a poke around guy see what you break and run away..... Anyway twigged it.... by deleting stuff and seeing what starts to disappear :
7. I've got the site running... I'm happy I can edit the template... but i can't for the life of me figure out how to edit content:confused: So to get me started can someone do a step by step to editing for example... the front page module called Urgent News and change both the header and the text inside it ... Much thanks.
8. got it just for anyone elses records... you need to edit (in the file css/template_css.css) body{ margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px; background: #9FB2C6 url(../images/page-bg.jpg) 0 0 repeat-x; text-align: center; font-family: Arial; color: #666666; } .......carry on down the page for a while..... #footer{ color: #9EA0A2; font-family: Arial; font-size: 10px; padding-top: 40px; position: relative; height: 100px; /* 30 */ clear: both; background-image: url('../images/footer.jpg'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: top center; background-color: #9FB2C6; font-weight: bold; }
9. ahh if it is thats easy enough to fine *famous last words
10. hi i twigged how to edit the template images to produce diffrent looking sites but when i modify page-bg.jpg it will only change the upper half of the page the other half of the page goes a grey color. any ideas how to change the grey bit?
11. I just decided tonight to look at joomla and install it on my domain.... downloaded the files ftped on... everything good so far. got to the point part things went iffy with the mysql & FTP settings not sure what but they did :'( thought oh i'll give this live support a go not expecting anything.... but i was impressed The guy/gal knew what he was talking about, knew which cms i was on about before i even told him/her and talked me right through it. step by step.
12. I will now have your babies , I hope this works on the server Im messing with. P.S im guessing as this takes you right up to the requirments for joomla it wouldn't be too hard to do tht tooooo.....
13. hmmm thanks for the info guys, i think i've decided on my plan of attack. 1. contact previous tech, that sorted out webmail. ask about line, isp, etc. 2. Meet with head of it, to discuss site and other webby things (to keep me from leaving, they gave me a role that lets me go over NM head in regards to web stuff) 3. Setup a test server, and have a play with some cms's for the site, iis, ftps, webdev etc. whilst i wait for decissions to be made and info to come through. 4. put it all together.... and hopefully it will pull itself together. any gapping holes, I should know about? also cms wise care to recommend a few? (i played with typo3 for a bit)
14. well I'm guessing there getting them from word/publisher and clicking clipart... a not so savvy user puts the e-letter together in publisher so i shouldn't think shes doing anything complicated.
15. ? ? huh, never mind google searched twigged it.
16. we have static ip and the server that it points to is running IIS 6.0 or 7.0 (the latest one for server 2003) if thats what you mean by http tech, and a dedicated line... i'll have to check that one. The site is fairly low bandwidth... 30,000 non unique hits a month but i should think most of that is coming from the kids/staff (1600 kids) having it as a fixed homepage, so just pointing there hp so it wouldn't go out and back in would cut most of it. *edit* What does it take to get a dedicated line, is it just a case of phoning a company and saying *little briton voice* I want that one?
17. We have 7 (i think more, but 7 at least) laptop trolleys each with 16 lappys in. 1. depends on which trolleys..... four have a dedicated person who moves them and checks laptops as well.... the others it depends on the teacher but mostly teachers/ departments techs puts trolley outside room, then lets kids collect. 2. 5 mins inbetween periods is enough for movement. 3. We only maintain the laptops & booking system and most damage is caused by vadilism to the keys, or hinges breaking on the not so well made laptops. Some advice i'd offer is.... Get extended warenties! Be aware your batteries will soon fubar with all the discharging and recharging. Sort out some system that finds the lil angels that vadelize the laptops. Also stress importance of looking after the laptops to HODs as you can defently tell which dep looks after there trolleys and which doesn't (the worst offending dep has 3 trolleys, and we have returned 35+ laptops for warrenty repair since September.... god bless toshiba and there warranty recording)
18. o/ I've been charged with the task of looking into hosting the schools website internally...... oh dear Now the reason behind this is the hosting fees where silly (£hundreds) and the host unrelible, i've done the short term thing and moved onto a cheaper & more relable host...... but I can't think how to get started hosting it internally. Has anyone else done something simular? can you suggest steps i need to make or terms i should google? P.S the school has a line going to the webmail server (setup by a previous tech, and something the NM knows nothing about), would it be a case of playing with these? P.S.S I assume at the same time i should be considering remote access to user areas (ftps) and/or webdev folders.
19. still on topic *well sort off* but is clipart royalty free? I seem to remember a arguement that went unanswered when doing a joint web project (at uni) and the issue has come to light again as im being asked to send e-letters out with clipart in.
20. o/ live in leicester but work in rugby, does tht still count
