Irony is that the phone is a 1:1 device, albeit with it's own data connection, and can (samsung) or soon will be able to (pixl) just plug into a kb/mouse/monitor for a desktop computer.

I would be inclined to take it apart if not under warranty and find the part number/ any identifiable information on the backlight. It's almost certain to be a generic part and you will probably find a compatible one on aliexpress /ebay

If that's true then Chromebooks have gotten a LOT worse over the last few years. Everything that was brought to us was nuked and reimaged and back out the door in under 2mins. Are these becoming like windows devices?

It's a chromebook. Its data is on the web, you have to go out of your way to save anything locally

Just delete the main user account - as soon as they log in it will sync back. The fix for 99% of chromebook issues is to just reimage.

We're paying about £6 per month per TB with Google - it's a mix of storage classes using "autoclass" With autoclass the data starts of as "standard" and progresses to less used and cheaper classes. If you know when you'll need the backup data (for regular testing of backup procedures) it would be cheaper to pick coldline depending on how often you need the data. The current prices are archive £0.92/TB, coldline £3.06/TB, Nearline £7.66/TB, standard £15.32/TB

vi doesn't have a spellchecker, it's free and only takes a decade to learn. Give them that, see what happens to the exam results, then watch the money flood in next year. On a serious note, I'm sure there are many free text editors that meet the specs, but I've not used any. IIRC we used a web based one for chromebooks but that was a few years back.

Yeah, why learn and pay for support on 4 different things: RAID, Backup, Snapshot, Filesystem when you can just learn a modern filesystem !

Just because a technology is different doesn't make it harder or any less well supported. We're not talking about some obscure edge case here, it pretty standard and well documented stuff that's been around for decades. Anybody who can read the docs for a RAID controller or veeam can do so for ZFS. 90% of AWS/GCP workloads are linux and 60% on Azure, the idea that this sort of thing is unsupported, not backed by third parties and there's too few skilled people is just absurd.

It's definitely supported, just buy a QNAP or a support contract if you want that and don't have the time or inclination to learn a better technology. Or carry on like you always have and not change anything.

I ran part of a windows-centric university, 20,000 users (mostly windows, and mac). All our servers ran from ZFS, all our file systems ran from ZFS. It wasn't bleeding edge at all.

It depends on which languages you are most familiar with as to how to achieve this. Essentially, all you need to do is to get each line you need change into a JSON format, authenticate and PUT or POST that to the API.

Isn't it part of the onboarding contract for Bromcom to do it? Last MIS migration we had contractors onsite supplied by the firm we were migrating to (not Bromcom) and they certainly did all this for us. Check the contract, it's probably something Bromcom could easily do.

Check the charging circuit, and whether the batteries have a charge. I'm sure they are fixable, but maybe not cost effective if it can't be done in house

Weird one, because AI should be good at talking to a suppliers API and giving a quote based on the output. It's not there yet, but a lot of (especially electronics) suppliers do offer api functionality. I think this would be doable with a well written prompt, to a specific endpoint.
