Thanks, guys, setting it to save in Desktops rather then All users Desktop did the trick. I'm curious to know where it stores it when you select All users desktops? It does work but won't allow you to delete? Anyways problem solved

Thanks, the other option in the GPU is Desktop, will give this a try and write back. And yes thats correct if you just create the GPO this would happen however in the common section of the GPO you can select Apply once so it will apply it and never recheck again Thanks good ayee

Thanks for reply all learning here Okay, I think I can see somewhat where this problem may lie. So These users do have a GPO which redirects the desktops. The Shortcut is getting added to %commondesktopdir%/ or in the drop-down menu as ''all users desktop'' I assume this is not actually placing a shortcut to there desktop but rather when logging in checks and sees the policy and adds it each login, but still being a prefrence why no delete. I have ticked apply one aswell

We already have a shortcut to network drives on the desktop, However, the teachers sometimes want 1 new thing specifically on the desktop under the users noses. If it can't be done then ill tell them that but realistically this should be feasible, it works just can't let users delete

Hi thanks for the reply, I was talking about two methods in post ill explain better just way tried. I've set Policy which creates a Desktop Shortcut. This shortcut directs them to the location of the folder so being a pdf Example Network/Share/Verbpicture.pdf - So this shortcut when opened will open the PDF, however when a user decided they don't want it will ask for the admin password to delete. Its under the Prefrence on user GPO, so not sure what can be changed

Go to affected machine and do IPCONFIG /ALL Then go to a working machine do the same thing, Cross refrence this to see any anomalities, if so investigate further on the issue

So a staff member wants sometimes a file normally a picture or PDF to teachers on their desktop, they are in a group and played around testing with my account. At the moment I have added the file to a drive all the teachers and I have access too and then created a GPO in user preferences to add shortcuts as Create and linked the location of the file this works great however for non admins you can't delete this shortcut which is a bummer, as these things are just references if they don't want them then I want them to be able to remove them. It being in preferences I would have thought it would be removable, what am I doing wrong? Also is there an alternative way? all of there desktop are located on the server, would prefer GPO way however open to here on how its done for future play/reference

I see many people on here are on parttime I'm assuming all older because will be tough to find 2 parttime tech jobs that can work well with days required.

It's a bit different as I'm in a private school and issues need to be fixed straight away rather than calling IT support or waiting for the parttime tech to fix it. Do you part time guys have to part time jobs or what? seems odd

I can see that, Recently implemented GPO with a schedule task to shutdown at 6.15pm when idle 15 minutes to my test 2 computers had no issues so deployed to 30 teachers machines over the next week they was shutting down at random times in the day!!, event log suggested it was the GPO, deleted the GPO however as I now learn't is not the best way or removing things like this! Mean't i had to rush round reimaging 40GB installs of software (30 mins each then 20 mins manually reboot and rename/connect ad later) to all 30 machines! Learning curve though, need to spend more time testing and checking event logger to see if applying correctly! - - - Updated - - - You on your own? how big is the school

Do other IT Technicians always have something to do? In a school with 400 or so students all 18+, most of the infrasturctre where im based is very good and solid, I am definitly worth while and price of lessons require no waiting hours to solve issues, however I can have days where I do not alot atall. do people always have something to do? So you are using outlook just as your GUI, who do you use as provider for personal email, do you own a domain website or another way? if so how much you pay a month

Was on Gmail for years and got so used to the UI which I enjoyed and great spam filters, also was useful doing . inbewteen as an alias as many other clients don't allow this Recently switched to try to get me away from Google and not use google account to link everything together. I now use mail.com mainly for the domain, my email is my [email protected] which is quite short and professional I think. Ads are more intrusive then gmails being in random order where Gmail was always on top and More obvious, however, mail.com can create 9 alias email addresses at the time which is really handy. The only downside is you have to click login every time. (yes I use auto save password I DC) What do you use and why? Like the sound of services that you pay but worried they could dissapear in x years whereas mail.com gmail and other have been around for age and seem more stable

I did try this, with most staff used to having desktop shortcuts, not sure how this behaves when they click on the link, will give it a try on one machine, seems easier option then remove the shortcuts to them seperatly and just have chrome shortcut

takes good 15-20 seconds, by which time 80% good staff opened a browser already and then another opens, which is a sure way to annoy them.

We use ISAMS aswell, Bing noise? Do they use IE? Ideally yes they would come in and do the register and open their email but the reality is most don't, they come in and start teaching, very unprofessional and my admin team should really come down on them with warnings rather than allow it. I'm only IT so I can't really tell them to do so. Noticed ISAMS have recently changed there password requirement to 12 letter passwords -.- Something I toyed with is chrome auto starting from boot which opens outlook and ISAMS, however, it takes a good 15-20 seconds to do this by which time 70% of the have opened a browser which would be annoying for another one to open.

Well because teachers are never in the same room they use online office 365, so notification wont come through unless you open the email plus using outlook will store the emails on the hard drive which will eat up the 120gb SSD pretty quick (so small I know). Shame you can't add access to small tasks lime msg.exe, just one member of staff I want to give it too

sorry yes, 9am, 10am, 11am ect, yes I agree, not only should they monitor email but they should do register in first 10 minutes, and admin staff has to run around for them to do it, I think they should be punished if they dont do it, just creating extra jobs.

You think its likely a staff member walks into the class at 9pm and open there email client open? they walk in open the resources and start teaching, realisticly the admins should threaten with sanctions over this rather then find an IT solutions but hey ho, its the job in hand, could do with something like this as a call for alert too

not really what you want me to say, I'm an apprentice at a school only IT staff and my manager in another school has recently left and left on my own until someone gets replaced so i can contact them for support.
