  1. IT Services at South Devon College is undergoing a restructure to align itself to the college's new Digital Strategy, and reinforce ITIL-based processes especially around a new customer-focused Service Desk. This has resulted in a number of new roles which represent an excellent opportunity to join a team and help define its new processes and shape its success over the coming years. These roles will report directly to me. Alongside relevant experience and a strong skillset, what is essential for these roles is a proactive and collaborative approach, agile thinking and a real drive to always be thinking “is there a better way of doing this”. I am looking for: Service Desk Manager Grade BS10 £30,125 – £32,429 This role will lead, manage and develop the Helpdesk team of First- and Second-line analysts to ensure that customer expectations around IT Service provision and responsiveness are set realistically, then met or exceeded. It is a new role with a strong emphasis on ‘Customer First’ and gives a fantastic opportunity to shape the service, its toolset and processes as it evolves. Experience of working in a similar role within an ITIL framework is essential, along with at least an ITIL v3 Foundation certificate. You will need to be a strong advocate and facilitator for development of ITIL-based processes across the IT Services team, ensuring appropriate balance of process against productivity for the College. This is a senior role within IT Services, so very strong communications skills and a good knowledge of all technical disciplines of a modern IT function will be required, these will be especially crucial when coordinating the resolution of complex issues with interconnected elements covering a mix of in-house and third party support whilst ensuring all stakeholders are kept up to date. Alongside normal Service desk roles this will also own the Change Management process within the team. Lead – Core Services Grade BS8 £23,520 – £26,006 This is an excellent opportunity to help define the service and monitoring and lead other team members in understanding the technologies and troubleshooting. The college is extending its use of 365, this coupled with a general ‘Cloud First’ approach to new or replacement systems will require skills around maintaining an monitoring email systems, web and email filtering, Active Directory, and secure and robust authentication connectors between onsite and Cloud services using ADFS, Azure AD and Shibboleth. In this role you will be the authoritative source for all these areas and expected to lead in future developments and streamlining. Lead – Platforms and Storage Grade BS8 £23,520 – £26,006 This new role will own the standardisation and evolution of the college’s servers and storage, focused on a migration to cloud-based services where possible and cost-effective. You will take ownership of reviewing and improving current monitoring processes, establishing best practices, and working with Security Analyst to ensure that the data held on these systems remains secure. Backups and recovery tests will also fall into the remit for this role. Current on-premise technologies include Hyper-V, VMware, and a mix of Dell and Fujitsu SANs. The new staff will initially be working remotely for all or part of the time due to the Covid-19 situation but there will be a need for occasional office visits with social distancing in place. Once this situation is over we'll be expecting staff to return to the office, although I will accommodate flexibility where staff may want to work remotely some of the time where this is possible. Please message me with any queries or questions, and I look forward to virtually meeting some of you for interviews! Paul Cooper Head of IT Services
  2. Sorry to jump on this from a slightly different angle, but what are you thinking about regards deskside visits where social distancing may be difficult? Gloves/mask or just try to avoid the risk at all or getting too close to sort someone's IT problem? I'm looking at what I need to do to keep staff & learners as safe as practically achievable without full hazmat suits and a decomtamination station in the car park!
  3. Hi all, I am looking for 3 x System Developers and 1 x Information Security Analysts for a 12 month fixed-term contract starting June/July. (Those dates apply even if we're still remote working then, we're using SharePoint and Teams as our main communication and data sharing tools) These are ideal for degree students looking for a placement year, or recent graduates looking to deploy their training and develop their skills further. I've been running the Developer program for two years with some excellent staff coming through, bringing great results for the college and the Security role is brand new for this year. The closing date for both applications is May 18th Developer (link to full details is here) The successful candidates will have two main areas of focus:Using Microsoft 365 tools including Power Apps and Power Automate to extend the use of Microsoft Teams and SharePoint to enable more agile and flexible working for staff and learners. Designing and maintaining reports/dashboards using data from a number of sources (mainly Microsoft SQL and Tribal EBS) and Power BI. You will use and develop skills in: Software design Database languages and structure Web technologies Programming Project management You will be exposed to and develop skills and experience in the use of ASP, C#, HTML, SQL Server including SSRS, SSIS, SSAS, Powershell and Visual Basic. You will also use various tools to include Microsoft Visual Studio, SharePoint, Microsoft Power BI, Microsoft Flow and Microsoft PowerApps. Security Analyst (link to full details is here): This is a brand new role which comes at a very interesting time as we are implementing our Digital Transformation Strategy, making much more use of the M365 estate and progressing from Cyber Essentials. One of the key areas this role will cover is bringing current thoughts and best practices to the team, and helping us work through requirements and implementation that will allow us to make better use of the 365 Security and Compliance toolset along with cloud protection, Microsoft InTune for endpoint and generally helping us raise our game. You don't need to be an existing expert in the toolsets, the core requirement is security best practices, threat vector awareness and evolving cyber security needs. Key aspects of the role are Communicate current and evolving threats, mechanisms and attack vectors to all IT Services staff, advising on risk and mitigation options. Review current security tools and processes and make recommendations for improvement. Collaborate with other members of the IT Services team, and external partners, to deliver IT Projects with a primary objective of ‘Security by Design’. If you're interested please apply through the college website using the links above, and if you know of someone who would be a good candidate for these roles please forward this on! If you have any questions about the role please pm me, email or use the contact details on the college website https://www.southdevon.ac.uk/ Thanks Paul Cooper Head of IT Services at South Devon College
  4. That's what we've done and the SLC are looking into it. In the meantime we're going through our message queue daily, filtering on the AWS domain and looking for any SLC emails that are blocked, reviewing 'just in case' then releasing. Bit of a pain and not really sustainable but it is what it is.
  5. Hi all, We've just come across an issue where SLC are sending some of their emails through a service that uses randomised AWS email addresses eg 01020171826d09a-b818401e-1aed-42b3-b543-d6c8925eac7e-000000@eu-west-1.amazonses.com Some of these are getting blocked by our email filter. These emails are tied into providing logins for college staff to access the SLC's HE portal. I'm really against whitelisting the whole domain, and I don't want to have to manually dredge through all emails from eu-west-1.amazonses.com to find the relevant emails. What are you doing to mitigate this? Thanks Paul
