I managed to add the policy group by logging onto the server and using RMMC from there. But it made no difference. Heh. When I try to acess Services in the admin tools I get this error still "The user policies prevent MMC from creating the Snap-in"

I'm not a member of Policy Managers no. I can't add myself as an error occurs "Error adding user to group(s)". However, none of the other admins is a member either and they don't have the same problems?

Out of interest, how and why did you discover this?

No user type is applied. Re: group policy - are you talking about on the Windows server? What would I need to check specifically? I've gone into it but I'm not experienced in that and have been limited to comparing my settings with other admins who do have full rights. I cannot see any differences at all.

Yes. i can't remember the wording right now but essentially I it doesn't seem to be able to find the folder. You can't browse to the shared folder using Network Places. I can only access the files by typing \\HOMEPC\ into Windows Explorer. It then takes a while, comes up with the password prompt and then shows the shared area on something it calls Unknown. I should clarify that - once logged in as above the Unknown comes up in network places with the shared folders on it. it's just that you can't get to that situation via network places. Also, if browse up the tree it loses it. Now, on a pure workgroup setup, that Unknown would normally be called WORKGROUP or whatever wouldn't it? Which is why I'm wondering if it is an workgroup/domain issue?

Hi I'd appreciate some tips on how to approach this. We use the Virtual CD app across the school to access media files like DVDs and CD-ROMs. On two PCs in the same location the playback is stuttering and unusable. I've checked the codecs are right but to no avail. I'm thinking it might be a network problem - slow/bottleneck. How would I go about troubleshooting this? Is there a way of monitoring the flow of that sort of data etc? thanks N

When connecting my work (well school) laptop to my home network, it took a while for me to work out how to share some of the folders on my home PC. I got it work but I can't map a network drive so I have to go through the same process each time. both are running XP Pro. is this something to do with the fact that my laptop is on a domain whereas my home network is set up as a workgroup? A few other questions from my curiosity?.... What allows the shares at all under there circumstances? Is it Netbios/Netbeui or something else? Where does Simple File Sharing come into this, if at all? Why can I only connect using the home PC's name rather than it's IP address? Why did I have to set up a user account (on the home PC) with a password to get this working? - the user account with no password doesn't work. Why can I not see shared folders on my laptop from my home PC? THANKS!

Hi I'm set up as a sys admin and domain admin on RM CC3 but I don't quite have the 100% control I need on certain workstations. E.g. on my own laptop I can't access all the Administrative Tools (like Services). I've checked my group memberships and I appear to be exactly the same as the other admins who do get full access. Any ideas folks? Thanks N

Hi Yes it is an intel wireless card. Browing the settings of it I didn't notice a setting that obviously covered such a feature - don't suppose you know which one it would be do you? Thanks for your help

I'm a bit hazy on this. I've literally just joined the school and so will need to check exactly how it's set up. Also my wireless experience is limited. Do you have some suggestions on exactly what to check in order for me to answer this fully? Thanks - sorry if this seems a bit dim.

Hi One of the teachers cannot logon wirelessly on her laptop but once logged on using an ethernet cable/port she can use the wireless network with no problems. Any ideas on this? Thanks Nozza
