That's the problem. I'm not bothered about what's in the https traffic I just want to block the whole site but it won't. We can't force the install of the certificate on student owned devices especially as now Android 7 and above devices require you go into developer mode to install the certificate. And who is going to go through all that trouble to get filtered when not doing it gives you unrestricted access?!
All I want is to block youtube.com etc. but Smoothwall cannot do that on when it comes from an app even though it is clearly marked as "YouTube" on the realtime view in Smoothwall.
After being on the phone with an engineer for quite a while I have discovered that you cannot force restricted mode or block the YouTube mobile app on student owned devices using Smoothwall "It's a web filter not an app filter"! It works great with domain clients where I can push the certificate to but not BYOD devices. The frustrating thing is you can see the traffic going through on the live view as "YouTube" but it doesn't block it.
Does anybody use a filter that this does work on? At this point we are considering dumping Smoothwall if we can find a better alternative.
Well we went with Ricoh direct in the end and so far they have been great. We had Papercut and RFID readers put on the machines which they set up, we provided the built vanilla server.
I have to say that this has been the smoothest copier install I have ever been involved in!
We're looking at our new photocopier lease and have narrowed it down to either Annodata or Ricoh direct.
I would be very grateful if any of you could share any experiences, good or bad, you have had with these companies.

Thanks for all your views. The other complication we have is that we a significant proportion of students with dyslexia which obviously causes issues.
At the moment we have four character minimum which expires at the standard 42 days. We are also still running 2003 AD mode because of a legacy DC/Exchange server that we are decommissioning during the summer holidays. Once we upgrade to 2008 AD mode we can at least force the staff to use a strong password without upsetting the students too much!
I've had a request from one our governors regarding our password policy for students. She wants to know what other schools enforce as she thinks ours should be along the lines of at least 8 characters including numbers and symbols and a history of ten passwords. I think is overkill for students but I would welcome any comments.
We currently use a public calendar in Exchange but we do only have 5 bookable rooms. It works quite well as most staff know how to use Outlook.
However, I have just installed Moodle so I will check out MRBS to see if it any better than using Outlook
I followed the install instructions here: Windows installation - MoodleDocs I think the important thing is that you do a manual install and not the Windows Installer.
I even managed to get the NTLM SSO working in the end!
We used Thin Station which is opensource :: Thinstation - a light, full-featured Linux thin client OS ::. It worked really well giving you the option of running diskless machines. We used it as a stop gap to keep old machines running until we could afford new ones. As an indicator we used a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 (single core) with 2GB of RAM and that ran 20 machines quite happily. We used Server 2003 so I don't know about 2008.
There's Win+r which brings up the run command box and win+f which brings up the file search screen.
I also use the PrtScr button quite a lot for taking screenshots for instruction manuals for the teachers. They do like instructions with lots of pictures!
