I have a Sandisk Sansa e280 with 8GB microSDHC card and the Rockbox firmware, which I use to play FLACs (the audiophile's choice of file format) and I find it to be a terrific setup. I've heard good things about the iRiver and Cowon iAudio players too - advancedmp3players.co.uk have a lot of choice, you should be able to find something to suit there...

I was asked yesterday by one of the students if she could practice her singing in my room (the server room) for the school talent show later that morning... she's one of my favourite kids in the school so I would've had no problem with it (especially not when it was my last day there too ) but I had to say no as my manager would've looked on it less kindly! She won anyway

I'm about to start the last week of my current job as the only IT tech at my school (working term time plus 10 days) on £13k. For my replacement, they've advertised for a Network Manager working full time for £22k-£26k. Even taking into account the loss of school holidays, I'm pretty sure the new person will still be earning more than I was on, despite what my manager and the head tried to tell me - I worked it out to be at least £4k more, although my maths may be off! I don't really want to kick up a fuss about the situation, but I'm not at all happy about it either... particularly when we were PAT trained and expected to test all the appliances in the school, and my replacement probably won't have that expectation placed on them.

Due to lack of experience, I had to have 12 or 13 interviews before I got my first role in IT and even that was part-time (although it's now full-time). And this was all before the credit crunch too! But there were definitely times where I never thought it would happen... I got my CV looked at by the Graduate service that one of our local unis was running at the time, which I think helped a little. And I would also recommend investigating the voluntary option further - I got a bit more experience by finding a position at a community centre on Home - iT4Communities. Best of luck mate

My main ones are Jobserve, the local newspaper's website and occasionally CWJobs as well. I totally agree about agencies being a nightmare - I very rarely hear back from them when I send my CV off and a lot of them don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to technology. When I was applying for my current job, virtually all the interviews I got were from direct applications too...

I'm in Sefton (Liverpool area) and on £12.5k for term time plus 10 days. My job title is ICT Technician but I'm the only full-time IT person in the school (excluding teaching staff) and I have full control over admin and curriculum networks (200+ workstations, 6 servers) but pretty much zero control over any of the IT budgets... does that make me a network manager? I have to look after the projectors too and I'm also supposed to be going on a PAT testing course later this month, which, as someone who isn't at all scientifically minded and doesn't have a clue with electrical stuff, I'm dreading

Our year 7s are creating databases (an address book) in Access 2003, but when they copy and paste a picture into a record, that picture is then displayed on all records when there should be different pictures on each record. If I delete that picture, it's then deleted on all records. Is there any way we can have different pictures for each record, maybe a setting we have to change or something like that? And the strange thing is that the problem is only happening on some machines, when all the rooms in question have been Ghosted with the same image...

Does anybody have a list of SATA cards which are compatible with the Quantum DLT-V4 tape drive? The drive isn't recognised in Windows 2003 on our new server and I've read that it's very picky about which controllers it works with... I've searched on Google and this forum and emailed Quantum for a list already, but received no reply. It's going to be used with BackupExec 12.5. Cheers!

Hi all, We have recently put Software Restriction Policies in place but even though shortcuts to applications etc. on the local C: drive no longer work, I've found some students storing shortcuts to the C: drive itself in their network user spaces, which still works and give them full read/write access in Explorer. Is there any way of disabling shortcuts altogether, except for the ones in our network Start Menu? Also, the students can access the C drive and bypass our Symantec Web Security proxy by simply typing addresses or paths into Word 2003's Web toolbar - could this be disabled too? Thanks in advance for any help!
