I had an awful week and by Friday I felt like crying all day. I got home and had a large rum and went to bed curled up in a ball and my head was swimming with stress and imagined threats. But then for some reason I remembered that scene from Star Trek: First Contact where Worf is trying to convince Captain Pickard to evacuate and self destruct the Enterprise because it is overrun with Borg. Pickard calls Worf a coward and he growls back "If you were any other man I would kill you where you stand!". And my face just crumpled and I was all like "Oh god they love each other SO MUCH!!" and started weeping. Sorry if that got a bit weird but yes I hadn't thought about that for a while.

I looked in to plusnet when I moved home, I was told by sales I could have static IPs but when I double checked on a second call was told I could request static IPs from the tech team but they couldn't guarantee it would be accepted. I also wouldn't be able to make the request until I had placed the order. And this was for a business package as well. So it wasn't a risk I was prepared to take. I went with Zen and can't recommend them enough. I think you get one static IPv4 address as standard or I pay £5ish more per month for a block of 8 (5 usable). You can request to be placed on the IPv6 trial too which I've had running for a while. I also run iRedMail based mailservers behind this setup, never had an issue with SMTP.

Not quite, ping is the time taken from A to Z, not A to B. What may interest you is the response time from A-B, B-C, C-D, D-E etc. Try these from your CMD prompt: ping google.com pathping google.com tracert google.com Compare the outputs and they will show you the response times per hop, between your PC, your nearest router, the next nearest link, etc. and would hopefully show you if there was a link in the chain that was much slower than the rest. That is the theory anyway, in your described situation this may not help much but hope this helps to explain.

I quit the internet as a social thing 15 years ago back when that was MSN messenger and forums, after all this time resisting I finally joined Facebook. So, "wow this is what the internet looks like to real people".
