  1. Yes Ben, that is correct but we only use it on the server(s) hosting users home folders, the others do not require close control, normal backup suffices here. Roger
  2. We use Undelete Server Edition here, allows quick restore and lists user name that deleted files, Server edition around £300, great for those times in between backups !! see here: Undelete
  3. Simon, thanks for the Gentleman & a Scholar, is that an apology for calling me an Old Codger?? ( I know its probably true, but not been called it in writing before) The reason the advert asked for MCSE etc, as a preference was to try and reduce/filter out the number of very low skill applicants we had last time, as you all know, the job requires a high degree of technical competence. Paper quals are just another tool along with experience to find the best person for the job. I had to work hard to persuade our SLT to pay that salary, they finally realised when my last technician left (who had paper quals and experience, but never intended to stay longer than 12mths, has gone to work for British Energy in Mechatronics at more than double his current salary) that to employ a comparable person you need to pay closer to industry rates. Unless we put forward a proper business case to SLT`s when we need to recruit to offer a decent salary, we will struggle to improve the lot of ICT Technicians!! Roger
  4. Thanks Simon, it is ok in the newspapers, Lancs CC made the error, will be changed shortly. Roger
  5. Alex, not sure what you mean, it is a full time post !! 37 Hrs per week 52 weeks per year, less your 22 days and Bank Holidays. The part time is an option. Roger
  6. Thanks Simon, I had to work hard on SLT to get that salary band !! As you know I am from industry and I was not prepared to suffer the same pain as last time trying to fill the post. The guy that has left had just finished his MSC at Lancaster uni when he came here, I new it would only be for 12 months, he got through a tremendous amount of work and has left the network in excellent shape. He has gone into industry, not IT but Mechatronics (Electronic Control) in the Nuclear industry at more than double his current salary, good luck to him. Roger
  7. Sadly, I am losing my Technician this week, Anyone interested advert is here. ICT Technician PM me if you need any more details Roger Central Lancaster High School
  8. If you have the old NT 4.0 resource kit tools CD there is a utility with a Gui called NETWATCH.EXE that lists logged on users by client/server and open files, we still use it here for quick checks also MST gives better functionality especially if you have it configured to use VNC. Roger
  9. Help Please. The music dept. has asked me to investigate the feasability of having music cd`s online over the network, we have not had a requirement for a cd server before so I have no experience of what is required (without researching) Questions: Recommended systems. Legalities for the multiple playing of music CD`s, multiple access to a CD, possiblity of software to restrict to singel user at a time? Ta, Roger
  10. Hi, we have been using Gaggle email (the free version) since I arrived here 2000, not had any problems, very secure. It is a large Canadian Company, lots of schools using it. Contacted them by email and they set a system up for the school. It is simple to use, particulary for the Year 7`s, easy to manage, lots of security features, just need to put up with the adverts on the free version. Roger
  11. Have good stock of batteries here LaptopBits
  12. That must be `Quote of the week` Geoff
  13. Separate, different IP ranges, one way trust, curric trusts admin, works fine.
  14. Came in today (Sat, no interruptions!!) Created a new policy from scatch for a test pupil, tested ok, no problems with Inet. Copied changes to existing pupil policy and it worked !! Only difference I can see is that in IE `Browser menus` ( I still have `Disable Save this program to disk option ` Enabled, the one you mentioned) but I have `Disable Open in a New Window menu option` set as `Not configured` don`t think this can be the problem, will test again, ran out of time. The only other problem i have is the PC`s in one ICT room do not appear to be updating the policy to the new settings ? ran a gpupdate /force. All other clients are updating to the new policy OK. Thanks for help so far, going home now. Roger
  15. No, not using that Fellas. Brain dead now :?: (what few cells I have left), going home in 30 mins will sleep on it !! Ta, Roger
  16. have you tried running a rsop on the machine remotely with the user logged in to see if its picked up the changes. Have just run that - something looks strange. Internet Explorer Maintenance only shows first 3 entries Title Bar Connection setting Proxy settings are all listed URL`s/important URLs No security zone settings are listed, next entry is: administrative templates/control panel Could this be the problem the Zone Settings are not being enabled ?? Not sure why they are not listed? keep digging Ta, Roger
  17. Doesn`t appear to be that setting fellas, it was enabled but changing has not had any effect, did run a gpupdate after changing - back to the drawing board ! be obvious when its foundas usual. Roger
  18. Nath, not sure what you mean by custom install of IE these are XP clients with SP2. Configured to suit, then image created. Do you mean if you disable file downloads in IE security settings during configuring the image, you cannot change it via GP later?? Roger
  19. Geoff, GPMC lists all `File download` as Enabled, that`s what is confusing. Something else I have just noticed - on one of the sites that we need access to it is a *.pdf document that needs opening, if you click on the link you get the `Restrictions` error message, but if you type the full URL to the document in the browser it opens OK !
  20. Chris, server2003 here, believe I ran gpupdate correctly from client. However I believe updates occurr automatically every 90mins, started this on Monday, should have updated by now.
  21. Started to work this route, we have DIDA also, hence original question. However I have hit a problem, having had file downloads (Pupil policy only) disabled for some time I changed the GP to enable downloads as a starting point but I cannot get file downloading enabled again !! Looked at the policy for ages, ran Gpupdate, Group Policy Modeling, All show downloads enabled, IE zones at default settings. Have tried copying profile from working user to default user profile on a test PC but has no effect. - having some senior moments here !! what am I missing ?? Roger

  23. Don`t have Censornet here Chris - Roger
  24. Thanks Geoff, unfortunately we don`t have a proxy server here. Will make it part of the ICT development plan. Roger
  25. I have had file downloads for students disabled via GP for some time now, as yuo would expect it has proven very effective in keeping the network free from `Junk` However I am having problems with website access to a number of sites that require valid use eg MFL dept: use Linguascope, when access is attempted to certain pages the file download disabled message appears, not sure what file (s) it is blocking? (logging on as a user without the policy in place does not give any clues) How are you people managing file downloads ?? Roger
