At my old place we had one stolen in the middle of main assembly, they jumped the fence and went in through a window. After that the head ordered all projectors must be in a cage. I personally think the cages are a deathtrap, the ones we had at least, the door weighted a ton and was not fitted, so if you forgot to lock it, it would just fall off. Never happened thankfully. A nightmare and I was glad when we replaced the projectors without cages, they are much cheaper now. I don't think its as much as a problem now, back then they were very very expensive. But if the head wants it the head gets.

These days most of us have 1000's of photos. Mostly taken on our phones, unless you use an actual camera. We end up with them all, but what to do with them. I have them all stored on my main computer, this computer is backed up, and then I have a third HDD with just the photos. One of these drives is taken and stored somewhere else (encrypted). But I have been in the situation in which a main computer HHD failed, and so did the backup drive. Plus you have the hassle of bringing the HDD's back and forth you update them. I was thinking about a raid drive, but then again these can also fail for various reasons, although a lot safer than one HDD. Anyway I finally decided I was going to just put them all on the cloud. People have told me, oh, someone will be looking at them, or, the account will be hacked and they will get your photos. I decided that was not really a valid con again cloud storage, most of us are nobodys and the governments of the world (mainly the US) are not going to care what we have stored. Sure, they can look at them, but I think given the massive number of users that is unlikely. Its surprising there is not a main service provider who offered storage within the uk, not even email services, its all based abroad. Mainly the US. Even BT, email service is from the US, cloud storage is in Finland, and BT has all these data centres in the UK! Do you trust cloud storage for personal photos? Do you back up your photos to the cloud?

Me too for holidays. You can go somewhere and that will stay with you forever, a piece of tech last a few years and gets boring. I always look at it like this, when you are on your deathbed, a once in a lifetime trip you once went on or the iPhone 6 you bought, what would you rather have done.

Yes don't bother with Windows 8. Windows 10 is not far away. Im sure you use classic shell or something like that. I have avoided it as many users have a panic attack when there is no start menu.

Its interesting some of us want to get away from tech, for me the issue is I work (ed) with it all day and outside work I don't want to deal with any tech, apart from TV. And I am going off that. Although I would struggle without a mobile.

Wired, wireless is not ready yet. It works but its not as good as wired, in terms of reliability. On a personal lever I have concerns over its safety but that would not have any judgement on deciding.

I think as you say a good balance, it depends also on the person. But I know managers without a single qualification and who run large networks across multiple sites, they have never had any issue and don't need contractors to do any work, as I have seen in some schools. I have also on the other hand heard horror stories, of whole networks being broken and all being lost, by people apparently with all the qualifications in the world, costing £400 an hour. No doubt it has happened the other way around. I have actually turned a job down many years ago because I did not like the feel of the people or the place, so personality is also important, not that I have much of it.

Maybe its today's youth. I started out at a company and worked there for three years, they used to take people straight from school providing you had a GCE in IT. I don't think I ever saw anyone as bad as this. We had lazy people and they did not last long. I cannot fathom how someone could not be capable of setting up a computer out of its box.

I have had rejections myself, all from academies, yet other types of school will give me an interview, even private schools. If they give an interview and then reject you fair enough, other factors come into play then. But to turn you down at once down due to lack of a qualification is poor game. I would understand for a managers position but for a techie in a school, I can't really see how a lack of a degree is a reason to turn someone down at an early stage.

I am job hunting at the moment after a break from work. I have applied for many jobs in academies (as I used to work at an academy for a long time) but they seem very keen on employing people with qualifications, even over common skills and experience. i.e. they will employ someone with no experience at all but who has a degree. I have seen these academies then re-advertise a few months later at it appears those they took on were "no good". An assumption of course. Yet I have had interviews at some very prestigious places and they care much more about your experience, over qualifications. So I have to ask managers on here, would you choose someone based on experience or qualifications? For a technicians job.

10 years have flown by, such a horrible thing. All it did was kill innocent people, those responsible can rot in hell. I was just a teenager at the time and was in school. My mum had to come and pick me up. I remember going to PE and everyone was saying Canary Whalf had been bombed, we all ran as fast as we could to see as it could be seen from our sports field, thankfully it was still standing. The world seemed a very bad place back then, I still remembered 9/11 fresh at the time, it seemed it was going to get very bad. My father used the underground to get to work, but the mobile networks crashed and I did not get through to him until about 1pm. It is something we are going to have to live with for many years to come, you cannot in my "limited" view, defeat what is causing these attacks. An idea cannot be defeated, it exists in people's mind.
