So, the survey was of 1000 students. In a lot of places that is a single school. The research is truly laughable. Jeremy Clarkson is rude ... does that make top Gear adult content? News about the civil war in Syria and the fight against IS is shocking ... does that make BBC news violent content? Social media ... this is always going to be something of a long debate. It has it's place but is open to abuse and open to being a distraction in the classroom ... but most students will be accessing via their own personal devices anyway. Ah ... but just enough news worthiness for it to be picked up by the currant bun and daily fail. Yes, another day on and I *still* can't believe how dreadful this article is!

The fact that they use one of the most educationally debunked terms says it all for me. "Digital natives"! Think I will pass this on to a few folk to get their reaction. I wonder how it compares to a more comprehensive report on use of tech in school, such as BESA's annual report?

It think that would be a good idea, as long as people remember that we have to be factual and are not sure of Daisy Groups objectives in this or who they are working with. I can't find the full report anywhere so we only have limited info, and previous practices of businesses that we can suggest as possible options (not facts).

Yes, if nothing else you might pass on something to a windows user that does not affect you unless you scan. Basic goo etiquette.

That was my first thought as well ... do a survey about how poor filtering is and then produce a report about how good schools using their products are after a suitable time? Maybe I am just being cynical. If this sort of report doesn't come from a reputable and notable source (e.g. Childnet, UK Safer Internet Centre) then I take it with a pinch of salt, no matter if it was first published in the Sun and then republished in the Daily Mail.

ClamAVX here, not the most perfect thing, but found that Sophos *really* killed the machine when scanning external drives across USB 2 or 3 (most of mine are, rather than FireWire 800).

Frequently it will be in the terms of contracts for holding a TLR. HoDs have managerial responsibility for their staff and so need to ensure a safe working environment for them and the children in their classes. This can be delegated down to other appropriately trained staff or outsourced / contracted (consider Risk Assessment in Science Labs), but the buck will frequently stop at the HoD before flying up to the Head. The science example is a good one because practical lessons will usually have an associated lesson plan what has already been signed off by the HoD (or designated member of staff), and the same goes for PE, etc. However, some jobs have an additional responsibility for continuing to ensure that the Risk Assessment is complied with (e.g. science, PE, drama, DT, etc). NUT and NASUWT have guides on this, as have ASCL.

My box just arrived, but waiting until next month before resubscribing ... Will probably do 3 months (playing one night a week) and see how it goes.

I use both. OneNote for team note taking, organising materials, etc Evernote for attached of scanned notes (I heavily use the EverNote stickers), linking to IFTTT and a few other bits. I try to keep all of one project or work stream on the service, and OneNote gives me good control over where notes are stored to collaborate on.

To be honest, it is not always about that. It is also about understanding about how others in the organisation line manage as well. As you are a cross-department specialist it means you have to interact with a variety of personnel and management structures, so understanding why different teams work in different ways can make your job easier, and have things run even smoother. The way things are ... option 2 is the best bet for you, for long term improvement. Yes, it means investment of time and effort ... but if you go for a job and say you did a 1 day management course compared to a course that gives significant credits should it be used for degrees or further qualifications ... it really does make a difference.

Courses dealing with people skills will do one of two things. 1 - run over a short period of time to verify your existing skill set on people skills 2 - run over a longer period of time to allow for skills / competencies to be understood and put into place (to allow for demonstration of application, e.g. work-based learning where the course focuses on your existing job / increased roles rather than being purely academic). It sounds like you want a course length that fits no 1, but the skills / competencies that come from no 2.

The NVQs in Management / Team Leading are a really good start, not just for working in education. If you do any sports then coaching courses will also work on the same skill set as well. The Qualifications in School Business Management (Qualifications for School Business Managers) are probably your best bet, giving you a full breadth of school management. Some members have completed the certificate so they could be able to help. (@sylv3r?) Prince2 is also handy but deals with process and structures of work rather than people skills (though you need both to do project management) FITS may seem a tad technical, but it covers important areas of management and whilst the materials may look dry, the round table discussions that go on whilst you are on the course can really open your eyes. The other option is to request time shadowing a fellow NM who manages a large team. One day a fortnight for 3 months will give you a wealth of ideas, as well as a sounding board for the person you are shadowing.

It needs announcing and supporting because there is still a significant amount of homophobia, anti-equality and plain closed-mindedness all over the world, with people using pathetic excuses to try and justify it. To combat this you do need champions ... the noted names ... folk who will stand up and say "Hey, look at me! Guess what, the world didn't end and we can all carry on as normal!" and then they can do that ... carry on as normal. Those that don't carry on as normal, such as the removal of the iPhone statue, etc ... that highlights those who need challenging because of their attitude. I'm almost glad the removal of the statue was done, to be honest. At reminds the rest of the world about the idiotic laws in some countries ... After the pressure of the Winter Olympics, something else was needed to continue to raise the profile of the plight of gay rights with Russia. Let's hope that attitudes are challenged and continue to change.
