PCounter seems to be the main player on here. we give the students more credit on request, but we activly check to see what they have printed. and obviously having to come to our office every 2 weeks is a big deterrant to most kids who would abuse it. they know the system is there, and they hardly ever abuse it.

we have Synchoneyes (made by Smart), and its basically installed on a machine (teachers) and a client on the computers in that room, mapped to the teacher. in addition to the teacher being able to view the classroom from thier desk, they can take remote control and lock the internet on all/some machines, shutdown all/some of the machines, but it has an easy to use quiz maker. advantage is, no need for additional setup - as the quiz will only go out to the machines in that teaching group!!!!

ports can be changed in Trillian, or a port forwarding utility. another problem we have is there is an a level programming course, and they write in C (and some in assembler), C Sharp, and .NET. pain when you look through the names. we use a service that blocks pretty much anything on any port (unless we need it, and ask them), however another school i know, uses thier own ISA server to block everything. Brilliant.
