it usually costs a small amount of money to get replacement media, but yeah, LEA won't be anything to do with it. We got ours from Viglen and in the case of us losing any discs like that we just ask if we can get some replacement media for it, (assuming you've already got the licenses for it) and they send one out after charging for replacing it.

Hi, I don't know if anyone can help or shed some light on this, Basically, someone has edited some data in Personnel 5 which needs to be restored for conversion to Personnel 7 However we have tried restoring the Star and System folders which is where we believe the personnel files are stored but when i try to restore it skips a load of files (this is restoring using Symantec Backup Exec 10.1), saying "skipped by user" I've attached a text file which shows some of the files skipped. This is certainly a tough issue. So much of our time is spent finding emulators, flash games, mp3s, etc Also kids are now accessing the windows games (sol, winmine etc), by tunneling through to the C drive through Word. We're using AB Tutor Control to watch what the kids have on their screens throughout school and I've currently set up a policy on it which will prevent the running of certain emulators, windows games and you could even stop kids running swf files. Obviously in the case of classes using swf files for work this poses a small problem but you can apply this policy for the duration of the lesson when kids aren't using flash. The saddening fact is that there isn't a lot you can do to put a full stop to kids bringing in games. It really has to be a joint effort between ourselves and the teachers. ...and relating to an earlier post... That's a shame, I bet those parents didn't have any other reasonable suggestions on how to deal with that kids misuse of ICT equipment. It's not much different from removing a kid from the classroom due to bad behaviour.

Urrrgh. Kids pinching remotes. Sooo many have been pinched here.... and it's 40 quid a pop with these Sahara projector remotes. I tell you what though it's a good idea with these projectors that they have these removable security panels (much like a car stereo), although when there's a power cut around school we have to go round all those projectors in school to turn them on. Still, I believe it's cut down on break ins. Sorry, strayed from projector remotes there. Wanted to voice my annoyance for kids stealing remotes.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions for dealing with spam on an exchange server? At the moment our general school email address gets spammed to high heaven! I've got some ideas on how to deal with it but just wondered if anyone's got any spam solutions to recommend?

Has anyone Demoted a DC on a live network? I've got a bit of a problem. A while back one of my colleagues accidentally named a pc in the library to "Library" which shared the name of the Library Server, also being used as a secondary DC. After this happened, we've not been able to connect to it over the network at all. It's also not functioning as a Domain Controller even though in it thinks it is. So, if I type in "\\library\" we get a "Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect" message. Obviously this is buggering up replication on the network, among other things. Plus, all the links to any library server applications and shares can't be accessed (although i've kinda sorted that by moving across stuff to our main DC (Curric05). If I do a DC Diag on Curric05 I get numerous replication errors plus... (not sure if this is anything) but on the service test it says "TrkWks Service is Stopped" and "TrkSvr Service is stopped". Now, this problem with the library server wasn't really causing many problems until yesterday when in one IT room (and it seems to be just one at the moment) it started to not pick up Group Policy. After checking up on Event Viewer i got the following message under application events: "Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (The network path was not found). Group Policy processing aborted." It's a bit of a strong guess but i'm guessing this is about the pc's trying to connect to the library DC to get group policy? If it is I guess I need to demote the Library DC. Has anyone done this in a live environment at all? Any suggestions? Or... am I totally wrong about this being the reason group policy has decided to not work?? Any help would be appreciated! (all this happens when my boss is on holiday! great!)

Argh! GP! You know what it's like! I've got a room where half the pc's are deciding to just not pick up the group policy! It's a living nightmare!! Now, they can right click on the desktop, don't pick up the desktop icons etc. It's all going bad. When I run an ipconfig it's attached to the network fine, plus i can see the computers using the tutor control program. It just seems to be randomly not picking up the GP. Please please please .... any suggestions?

Haven't got a crossover or a hub spare at the moment annoyingly. Status page says the IP is correct. The one i'm most interested in getting to work is our HP Laserjet 4000 All the printers have jet direct network cards.

Help! Pleeease! So, half the printers in my school are working, half are not. Here's what we know: I've been setting them up on our DC (don't have a dedicated print server), all printers have been set up with a manual IP (172.25.0.100 - 111) I can print to 5 out of 11 printers at the moment. I can't ping those 6 printers that aren't printing. Those printers are definitely plugged into a working network port on the correct network. The manual IP settings i've put into the printer match the settings on similar printers that work (apart from the individual IP 172.25.0.1xx). Anyone experienced similar problems? Or any suggestions at all? Would be massively appreciated. I'll buy you a beer.

i cancel :-( hanging for 2 minutes seems a bit too much

It would appear that this error appears because the profile becomes corrupted, and you can just create a new one.... but..... Outlook hangs when you try and open it... presumably the corruption will happen again. The only thing that connects these two pc's is the fact they're two finance pc's that have the latest version of FMS. Has anyone experienced any problems with the latest version of FMS?

Since my last post on my Exchange "issues" i've made some progress, the service packs have solved the majority of issues, yet.... one issue still remains... I get this error saying "The specified default store could not be opened. Please make sure you can access your default store and try again." Any clues as to how to resolve this issue?

i'm working from the exchange server apart from when i'm setting them up on outlook and it comes up with those error messages

i've got two problems which are frustrating the hell out of me! 1) I've got one user who after adding their mailbox in AD it says it can't find the user in the address book when entering the username on the outlook add an exchange account page in AD when i click on the user properties, under the E-Mail adresses tab it's not automatically putting in email addresses (almost as if it's not picking up the recipient policy) 2) I've got another user which seems to have created the mailbox fine in AD and appears in exch. system manager, yet it's saying it can't pick up the default mailbox store when i try to add the user Any suggestions would reeeally be appreciated!

This is why I don't have kids! I think, what I would do, is have one pc connected to the internet in a communal area that could be supervised (to an extent obviously) and all the other pc's have them networked but not connected to the internet. If I had children I wouldn't really let them on the net unsupervised just because of the amount of "bad stuff" on there which they will blatantly try to access if they have it to themselves. I'm always sceptical about NetNanny and stuff like that as kids will always try and find a way around these things. A big headache either way. Just remove the internet from your house entirely and send them down to the local library! Yay!

Cheers, appreciate the help. At the moment I've got to hunt down someone whoever's responsible and get them to sort me out with a fixed IP. So far, Education Bradford point there finger at Blueyonder and at Blueyonder it's the person who's responsible for our account, not surprisingly the guy hasn't rung me back yet. I wish people working at Blueyonder were as helpful as people on here!!

I think what might be the problem is not having an external IP for the exchange server. Can't receive emails and.... don't think i can send either, i'm sure i've tested that (been on holiday since and have a terrible memory).
