Your wrong. It's only Windows 8.1 that needs to apply Update 1. Windows 8 is ok. Connected my laptop up to the TV yesterday (Panasonic), played a movie fine. Tried today, no sound is coming out over the TV. Seriously WTF, it's driving me nuts, same TV, same HDMI cable. Tried other (smaller) tv and it works ok. Any ideas?!? Laptop isn't on internet, so not like a driver has updated or such.

I tend to find "successful" access to the documentation from schools result in one of the following scenarios: - Receives documentation, look at it, tries it, fails, give up. IBM Carbon X1, bloody amazing, they even do a AIO that looks like a imac too, when I went to Microsoft HQ in London I had to say I had to look twice as it looked like they all had imac lol! Have a look at the Dell Latitude 6430u, just got one at work and it's amazing, assuming you've got the SSD fitted, even with 4gb ram it's quick. Thing I like about the Mac is there is just one. Does that make sense? They don't do a cheap version, even their cut down cheap mac mini is £500 - they don't cut corners. It's not like you need to worry about that 6GB laptop only having a celeron in it. So I can see the benefit if you can't be bothered to waste hours researching the market, you can pretty much just walk into an Apple store with at least £1k and walk out with a good machine that will last you years and years. Also they are pretty regular when it comes to releasing new models, rather then PCs which a new CPU comes out, then a new gpu a few months later - good if you replace a part every few months. I previously got a Mac Mini that was in a bit of bad shape for £30, managed to get it working and it was alright, good build quality just slow, well what do you expect for £30. I'm tempted to go buy a new one, but at £500, it'll be a while. I don't think I'll get anything else as it's not worth it for me. I mean my PC cost me £200 and I've spent maybe another £350 on it. If someone put £1k in my hand I'd get a Mac Mini and spend the rest on more important things. Finance is a no-no when it comes to computers. One thing I will say, my mate sold his iPad then spend a extra few quid and got himself a new iPad, he also does it with his MacBook, that makes sense, it's like buying warranty, only you get a new one every few years - Apple machines do hold their value quite well.

I think the key difference here is you guys are recycling them, your not moving it - your not taking a machine from the office which was heavily used and putting it in the staff room so it could be lightly used.

Can't decide if we're saying some schools might have financial planning problem (ironic I know), or they are just plan hoarding - ie they aren't throwing away computers when they replace them so their estate is larger then what it should be\can afford to maintain. Yup, put it another way your telling someone stand next to a electrical device that transfers flammable powder onto paper whilst a fire is raging at an unknown distance from their person. That's a pretty evil way to kill someone off I must say. Only way I'd think about doing it electronic is if everything was in the cloud and to be honest, prob not even then, don't think I would want to be worrying about getting a 3G signal or the device crashing in that scenario, plus the idea of batteries + fire doesn't quite sit right. For me, your doing be the best you can as a technician. You've got a smoothwall box, your monitoring it. The schools got something in place to deal with it - as clearly something happened and they've reacted (important to note the technician job isn't to react to the information, just to help them identify it and to pass it on to the correct people). Has the rest of the school has done enough, well I don't know. I guess that's up to OfSted and co. Clearly you know some schools that we would both say are failing their duty of care, I can't see how unfiltered internet connections in schools is acceptable. I'd hope OfSted would pick up on this.

I'd hope this is isn't a common thing! Certainly if more and more schools are moving anyway from LA\RBC broadband with enforced filtering. Still not sure what a screenshot is going to do! I think my first reaction to the school telling me that my son has spent the day entering "boobs" into Google wouldn't be prove it, it would be why is my son going on the internet unsupervised which would be followed up (after much complaining) by why haven't they enforced the Google strict search so the images don't appear. Only after I calmed down would I be having the conversion with him about how it's wrong to do it - as funny as he finds it. This would probability be followed by me sifting through the school transfer guidance that the missus has sent me earlier in the day. I trust my son's school that if something did happen, they would have the correct processes in place to deal with it, ie getting it promptly blocked and not waiting until the end of the week when it pops up in the logs\when they go through the screenshots, or even not finding it at all!! - I know when I worked in a school we had an issue where someone misspelt tennis (missed out a n) which returned some unwanted results. So I accept even with supervised, filtered access something could happen. So is buying software that takes screenshots to prove that it happens so parents believe them? I just can't see the benefit really. I mean I'd rather they hired a technician to physically monitor the computers then the logs\screenshots - least they could fix them when they break
